Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

don't, if it runs, keep it that way!

Both my jeeps are currently in "runs but probably should not be driven" shape. XJ still needs a tranny, I still need to swap in my track bar + axles and do the SYE too. MJ still needs a new windshield, headliner, engine mounts, transmission, front driveshaft, rear axle, gas tank, fuel pump... the list goes on...

"jeep #3" is my current project while I limp the other two around. It's a 2.5/ax-whatever/d35/beam '90 MJ, minus frame, cab, axles, transmission, with a custom frame and exhaust system added :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i needed to take "The History of Baseball" for my major
they offer that one at UMass too. it's actually pretty hard. lots of facts.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

For the street. Easy in and out. Get them.
ohhhhhh, niiiiicceeee.
But friggen expensive.

You can get any color combo you want. I posted that one as it was the closest stock photo that would match Mark's interior.
Yep, requirement of any seat I get is Tan leather.

Good luck hammering or using a vice on new axleshaft bearings. I wouldn't even bother trying. With a press it takes about a minute per shaft to put new ones on.

Nothing to do with steel on steel, it's the fact that it takes more pressure than you could exert.

Think about the amount of force an axleshaft sees in certain situations. Picture your rear axle flexed out, your jeep almost sideways, meaning the majority of the weight of the jeep is on the inner sidewall of the rear tire trying to pull the axleshaft out of the axle.

What's keeping the shaft in on a non-cclip axle? The bearing retainer. What keeps the bearing on? The pressed on collar.

You think hammering is going to get that thing on?

Good luck.

 Not trying to pick on ya, just saying. I wouldn't bother. Feel free to prove me wrong.

i dunno. it might not be as pretty as a press but i bet it could be done.

correct me if i'm wrong (and i honestly might be, i'm not too familiar with my new rear axle yet) but the bearing presses on the axle shaft and the conical bearing sits in a race on the inside of the tube and a bearing retainer bolts on to hold the 2 together. i guess it is the press fit holding everything in... i dunno. about the tightest press fit you can have and still have a re-useable surface is .0015. i've worked with stuff that tight before and yeah it's tight but it can totally be done with a hammer.

Anthony, there is NO WAY you can hammer one of those collars on if they are anything like the D44, trust me.

At my first co-op, we had this gigantic arbor press in our full machine shop, and one of the guys in the shop, (who constantly wore shirts with cut off sleeves to show off his most likely steroid induced muscles, so its not like it was a weakling like me doing it) was hanging off the press, and even bent the handle to the press, and we didn't even get the thing to seat even 1/16 of an inch.

I took it to a machine shop, and he had a b*tch of a time pressing it on, I actually saw the whole collar bend before it slid over the shaft. When it finally did, it made a loud pop, and there was a sliver of metal that was sheared off the collar, so sharp the guy cut his hand on it when he went to pick it up.

I have been somewhat doubtful if the 12 ton press I have will get the job done.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't even understand how those classes get approved.

Like seriously?

Maybe as extracurricular groups or something but credited classes?

Come on.
It is called a liberal arts major.
PHYS - "Actual Field Testing of D35 Max Torque Rating"

FINANCE - "D44 or D60: Which is more cost effective?"

MECH ENG - "Design Flaws of the D30 Differential Carrier"
Haha! We could teach those!
I feel like I shoud rip my Jeep apart and change a bunch of stuff so I can fit in with all you guys.
No. Don't. Smaller = cheaper.

that's the kind of information i didn't have. makes sense. we have a similar press and a similar guy here. he's about 5'8" and weighs about 250lbs and is pretty much solid steroid-induced muscle.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

It really feels like it's 1700...

probably because the stuff I'm working on at the moment, well, let's just say I'd prefer to slam my hand in a car door, it'd be more fun.

i dunno. that really friggin hurts.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Trust me... this part of the project has kept me on the edge of walking to my boss's cube and quitting for several months now. If I could slam my hand in a door once and be sure that I wouldn't have to deal with this anymore, I would do so, the hand would stop hurting in a few weeks.

speaking of fingers in car doors, the rest of my thumbnail just fell off earlier today
Mine's still purple/black/whatever. It looks like it might be growing back without falling off though.
