Give me one:D ill experiment TIG welding the case block-off piece in. im fairly confident i could do it no prob, i even have some alum. rod kicking around

been reading that thread for awhile ross, i guess ill keep my plan with keeping in on the back burner and run it if i need to iguess, i feel like i just wasted $250

Eh, while it stinks, I think you'll be ok.
Grab a new carrier or get that D70 detroit that fits in the 2 piece carrier with 35 spline shafts. Grab some 4340 35 spliner's for $130ea or some 1541H for $90ea. Add some disc brakes and you'll be into it for less than ~$800-900 total for the rear. That's less than I have into mine.

i still think ill just weld it and run disc and that be it, the insides of this axle got some rust like its been sitting for forever, hopfully it will hold up if i run it, right now even running tons at all aint looking to promising

I'm less worried about the case and more about making a shaft to join the output of the cut-down np231 doubler and the input of the transfer case. Definitely will have to think about it some more though; my concept of it is: (1) take out front output shaft and chain, (2) chop off extra part of case (adapt shift rails and oil pump pickup as needed), (3) ???, (4) profit!

Also haven't quite figured out the easiest/strongest way of putting a clocking ring on the back of the doubler np231.

I know but it's kinda very cheap too :gee:

7.4:1 low-low is good enough for me, especially because I really don't need such a thing. I'm going to pop one of the 231s apart and really learn how they work and see if I can make the whole assembly somewhat shorter as well.

ever done a sye? you learn pretty quick what's inside there when you take a couple things off and pop the case apart.

there are some things that could be done to make it shorter. i think they'd require a semi-significant amount of well-fixtured fabrication (keeping planes parallel, etc). i have a couple ideas but i'm not going to waste time on that just yet. i don't even have the tools to weld aluminum at home.

so i know that my 14 bolt is a FF but all other FF axles i have seen have splines on both ends of the shaft, the 14 has splines and a flange. why is this? i read the bible buut that didnt provide any answers
