THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

They came off a black 99 iirc, my worry is that the hood bracing is a lot narrower than the hatch, and I can compress the old fiberglas hatch struts with one arm so I'm pretty sure they are a lot weaker. Compressing this one by bracing the end on the center of my chest and pulling in with both arms is making me sore after like 5 tries though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think it'll be fine. You close metal hatches on the newer style XJ's with them. And the older one are fiberglass, as far as I'm concerned the fiber glass on the hatch would break before the metal of the hood would bend.

you ever had to hold up a hatch without the struts? there a hell of alot heavier then hoods

The hatch is much heavier than the hood.

I have this big long explanation complete with center of gravities, the moments applied to the hinges and struts, the moment of inertia of the hood/hatch, the force applied to close the hatch/hood, and the resulting force transferred to the struts....

but I'm too damn lazy to type all that sh*t out.

Edit: Damn, Rob beat me to it. I took too long typing all that sh*t.
But ya, I can pick up and move a hood around by myself no prob. I needed someone else to help me move a hatch around.

I think it will be fine. the way the forces are put on it should be OK. with the strut fully extended there will be no real added force put on the hood. With the thing fully compressed the forces will be almost parallel with the hood so as long as whatever angle you use for this is long enough to have a decent contact patch you should be fine. I have an idea of what I am doing already so I guess we will see how it works out (my plans always work much better in my mind... Hell... in my head my home made rockers looked good :wierd:, actually the rockers came out pretty good.. welds still need a bit of work but I don't really care abotu them since they will be cut out and replaced with steel box sooner than later anyway).

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm more worried about closing the hood without bending it, and getting socked in the jaw by it opening :roflmao:

And yeah the hatches are a two hand job, hoods are like 30lbs max.

Ya, I can pick up a hatch with my dick. I could teach you guys how but I don't feel like typing out the long explanation to how it all has to work (ie- inertia, centripetal force, light refraction, and etc..). It's a complicated process but saves alot of time and the need for an extra set of hands.

x2 on that.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm pretty sure they were off an XJ with the metal hatch as they were pulled off a new body style XJ (I can't remember if metal hatch started as soon as the new body style did or if it was added a year or 2 later). And I am pretty sure the fiberglass ones don't have this much push behind 'em.

But like I said, I will lab rat it and report back

ill trade you some weak pre 96 struts for your strong 97+ struts if you think they are too strong.

or how about my weakened 97+ struts.

im sick of my hatch falling on my head

I would say sure, but I only have one. Ken has the other.

So Ken, you should keep that strut in the Jeep and if we both end up in Lowell for a beer this weekend I can grab it and maybe trade them out for some weaker struts since I'm a bit closer to RI than you are? :dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

YAY im getting a 70 tomorow, and those wondering about the carrier, its a 2piece, spiders are inside, but it will get a detroit

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

YAY, I'm hoping to make a trip to PA this weekend with Rosstafarian to pick up that 30. Gonna try to make the trip in a day!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My buddy has a yellow SV650 with the half fairing. I just hate how short my legs are, I have to put half my ass off the seat to stand flat foot on one side.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

wow. i can flat foot no problem with bent knees. and i put a seat that's 1" thicker on.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm about 5'5" and 125lbs. Ima wee liddle boy. People look at me and then the bike and laugh. But what they don't know is I've been riding dirtbikes and ATV's for 10 years and done a few races on dirtbikes.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

cool. that will definitely help. this is my first bike. i put a bit more than 3k on it in 2.5 months too. :D

that bike must scream with you, being so small, on it... a buddy of mine that's barely bigger than you has a SV and i think just the weight difference of the rider makes a significant difference.
