THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

There is a good chance I may actually build my cage out of pipe.

So far I think choices are:

Modded HF bender and 1.9" .140wall a53 pipe

or

Speedway bender or DIY and 1.75 .120wall HREW or DOM depending on price.

It all comes down to price. If DOM is ALOT more expensive i'll go with pipe probably even if HREW is similar in price. I feel more comfortable with the added diameter and thickness of the pipe. From my understanding pipe and HREW are similar strength wise so long as the pipe is ASTM rated.

kyle, i've driven that exact m715. it's sweet. if you can figure out a way to get it, do it. my buddy that owned it before iron lug really wants it but he's in wisconson for grad school for a few years and had no where to keep it so he sold it. he and i are both keeping tabs on who owns it.

Not sure how the sched 40 pipe that my rock sliders use compare to what you want to use, but they dent EASILY. I'm surprised they're still attached, and a cage would take way more abuse then these see.

 That's right.

Ok, I told myself I wasn't going to get into this discussion so I'm not going to argue Pipe vs HREW vs DOM with you. I will say DOM or HREW isn't all that much more expensive if you order enough of it. Sure if you buy it stick by stick (and/or pay cut fees) you'll pay up the nose. However if you do like I did and order a ton the price drops a whole heck of a lot. I don't remember exactly (I could look if you wanted) but I believe I paid right around the low $3.xx/ft for the 1.75" 0.120wall DOM. HREW was about a buck cheaper if I ordered the same quantity. I could have saved a few more dollars by only ordering DOM for the heavy structural parts and using HREW for the rest.

You sure your sliders are made out of pipe? Also all schedule 40 is not the same, far from it. It is simply an indication of thickness. If you don't know exactly what your sliders are made of I dont care how they hold up because I can't compare it to anything. One simple way to find out if they're even pipe is to go out and measure them. Typical pipe sizes are 1.66 and 1.90 OD(1/4 and 1.5 pipe).

Yep 100% sure, AJ said so. He also recently switched from using pipe to using DOM because the pipe wasn't holding up.

Next time you're at my house, look at my sliders. They are getting BEAT.

colin, we could probably cut em off and burn new tubing on...

I'm going to cut out my rockers and use 2x6 eventually, so I'm in no hurry to modify these.

Thanks for the offer though. I'll definitely add tube when I go the 2x6 route, as it has saved my doors numerous times.

How many feet did you order? If it's $3/ft there's my decision right there. I'll obviously need quite a bit. I expect to need what around 200ft(out of my ass guess). I don't insist on using a sh!tty bender and pipe or anything. Pipe will probably cost about the same if DOM is that cheap then I'd only save a few hundred on getting a crap bender.

BTW, wasn't starting an argument I was just busting your balls.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

2x6 ftw. i should be getting the ball rolling on mine soonish.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Damn, Bill totally ruined my hopes of running a pipe cage. I was really hoping DOM was going to be really expensive.

I believe I ordered just under 300ft of just 1.75" DOM, but I'd have to look to double check. I also had some other things on that order.

I know. :)

While I was doing that I was also doing it even moreso. I did the leg work for you. :D

cmelo is right, there are many grades of pipe.
I called my supplier. ;)

For 200ft of the following:
1.75" 0.120" wall DOM $3.97/ft (price went up since I bought it)
1.75" 0.120" wall HREW $2.68/ft
1.5 Nominal (1.9" OD) ASTM A53 Sch 40 Pipe $3.87/ft
1.25 Nominal (1.66" OD) ASTM A53 Sch 40 Pipe $2.27/ft

So... make up your mind based on that.

Wow thanks, DOM is definitely a no brainer then. If I had wanted to go 1.25 sch40 it might have made sense but I don't trust it on a vehicle my size. Now I just need to decide if I want the speedway or whatever bender($399 including a 1.75 die) or make my own but I believe dies are $300 on their own..?

HAHA. eat shit carmelo.
