Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i bet I could kill that 30...in 2 wheeling trips

I bet I could kill that 30 instantaneously

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't think I am going to build a 60:

Reasons:
1. It will cost more
2. I will need to change the front suspension (probably a 3 link)
3. I would need to buy new wheels and tires
4. It would be wider
5. Lots more unsprung weight
6. I'd have to build a rear axle as well
7. different drivesahfts?
8. i'm not sure how big of a tire i'm going to run (i'm thinking 37's will be it for me for this Jeep)
9. I'd have to stiffen the unibody even more than I have to with the 44.
10. I don't have a DD I can drive while putting togethor this Jeep.

I know i'm forgetting other things but you get the point...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

1. It will cost more

Do it once do it right. That was always your motto anyway right?

2. I will need to change the front suspension (probably a 3 link)

This is arguable, but I'd probably agree yes. I don't think I would run drop brackets with a D60. Maybe on road, but not offroad.

3. I would need to buy new wheels and tires

Moot point since you could buy used and probably break even.

4. It would be wider

Barely. The way I'm building mine it will be 1.5" wider on each side. Barely noticeable.

5. Lots more unsprung weight

Are you into go fast stuff now? AFAIK, unsprung weight is better for crawling?

6. I'd have to build a rear axle as well

Moot point. Again you could probably come close to breaking even. You don't HAVE to have disc brakes, etc, etc on a 14b. Do it in stages.

7. different drivesahfts?

Vetteboy runs 1310s on his tons. If anything, run an AX-15 shaft out front. About 3 inches shorter IIRC.

8. i'm not sure how big of a tire i'm going to run (i'm thinking 37's will be it for me for this Jeep)

So, again, marginal on 37s (D44) or bulletproof on 37s (D60)? Stock D44 shafts aren't going to last on 37s. You're now talking about CTMs/Yukon joints with chromolys.

9. I'd have to stiffen the unibody even more than I have to with the 44.

You were planning on doing full length rail stiffeners anyway right? $130 from HD Offroad.

10. I don't have a DD I can drive while putting togethor this Jeep.

Build the axles on the side. You can do everything in stages. Nothing changes from what you are doing right now with your front 44. You can do the stiffeners in a weekend. Do a different suspension setup in a weekend unless it's custom. After that, all you're doing is bolting in a different axle and checking clearances.

I'm not trying to talk you into it (though this post made it sound like it), but just make sure you think this through a lot. I made a big mistake when I built my D30 up the way I did.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

this whole swap thing is a wicked PITA...I decide that i've made up my mind and then another thing swings my decisions in a different direction.

And nobody is going to convince me going one way or the other. It's just your opinion about doing what is probably going to be right for me. I do want to do it the right way so now this raises the question:

What front suspension?
Would Coilovers make things easier?
Fabricated crossmember?

Welcome to my world. I went back and forth on a D44/D60 every other week. Just ask Bill and Mark :D.

What front suspension?

Keep it coil/3 link for cost/simplicity.

Would Coilovers make things easier?

No because now you need to fabricate new upper mounts. I'd keep it coils.

Fabricated crossmember?

Depends. Do you want to fabricate a 3-link setup or buy one off the shelf?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

noooooo my warranty old man emu springs are on "backorder" and they aren't going to ship until mid october! :( :(They'll ship as soon as they get them supposedly, but booo now i dont know if i'll be able to wheel on the third. maybe i'll have to make some sort of hardcore bumpstop plate so i can have 1" uptravel and whatever downtravel

at least theyre free though, right? :dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Colin answered this pretty well, but….
I don't think I am going to build a 60:
No pressure from me, however… LAME! Answer ALL my questions and I'll drop the subject forever. :D
1. It will cost more
Did you do the itemized list like I asked you? At this point I am putting down $5 that says you can do the swap for within $500 of the D44 swap. You have bolt in stuff you can sell like your 8.8, it is not like you have a D35 worth nothing.
2. I will need to change the front suspension (probably a 3 link)
WHY? Sure, DBs aren't the most ideal, but you run them now so they’ll continue to work.
This is an excuse because you need reasons not to do it.
3. I would need to buy new wheels and tires
So… sell your current ones after the swap to make your money back.
Again this is an excuse because you need reasons not to do it.
4. It would be wider
As we figured out last night, 2-3” wider. No big deal.
5. Lots more unsprung weight
When did you become a desert racer? This has little effect on wheeling out here.
Yet, again this is an excuse because you need reasons not to do it.
6. I'd have to build a rear axle as well
So? A rear is simple, nothing to it.
Jesus, stop already this is an excuse because you need reasons not to do it.
7. different drivesahfts?
You might need to modify your driveshaft for the D44 anyway. Simple and cheap, heck do it yourself even.
Your fishing for excuses with a cargo net now...
8. i'm not sure how big of a tire i'm going to run (i'm thinking 37's will be it for me for this Jeep)
36s or 37s would be fine.
Feed the inchitis and stop the excuses.
9. I'd have to stiffen the unibody even more than I have to with the 44.
How did you come to this conclusion? Do to the slightly heavier weight? Either way you should have the same reinforcements.
You have more excuses than a 14 yr old girl that was caught sneaking around at night.
10. I don't have a DD I can drive while putting togethor this Jeep.
Why can’t you build the D60/whatever rear on the side like you are planning on doing for the D44?

You are getting WAY ahead of yourself. For the love of god, stop fishing for excuses already.
None of that is needed. None. Build that later.
airshocks> coilovers
Not when your rig weights a bunch.

At least they are standing behind their product, backorder or not.
