i was bored, so i decided to make the d-ring mounts. 2.5"x7" 3/4" plate. biggest drill bit i have right now is 1/2", so thats where i stopped. tomorrow ill hit up a local tool supply to get a nice 1/2"-1" set or at least the bits i need.

hey mark, how many cutting wheels you think it took me to make these?

So Carmelo helped me pick up the HP44 from Bob today (thanks man!). Bob threw on a stock cover for me (thanks again for pulling it man!), and we loaded into the back of the CTD.

Now apparently the guy totally rebuilt the whole thing, but used what appears to be the factory 4.10 gears. Bob tried to run a pattern to see how it looked, but since used gears are hard to check he couldn't get an accurate reading and assumed the original gears were used.

It seems to have all new parts, as the brake pads don't even look worn. Also, really sweet part, he had Clayton weld all their brackets on! No more destroyed UCA bushings for me!!!

The only thing I want to change is the u-joints to full-circle c clips. Stock shafts for now, Ford length driver's side and Waggy pass side.

Bill and Mark are coming on Saturday to gear it to 4.88s (thanks again guys I owe you both BIG time!).

Mark, can you help me identify if this is an F250 or an F150???

The only thing I want to change is the u-joints to full-circle c clips. Stock shafts for now, Ford length driver's side and Waggy pass side.

I can, with those hubs it's from a F150.

Also, really sweet part, he had Clayton weld all their brackets on! No more destroyed UCA bushings for me!!!

aside from just being awesome johnny joints for UCA bushings, all the brackets are stock setup, but located 1"-1.5" higher up on the housing. notice the tall UCA mounts and the LCA mounts shouldnt hang below the tubes.

I can, with those hubs it's from a F150.

the outers are 1/2 ton stuff, but the center section and tubes look to be 3/4 ton. notice the trimmed leaf spring mount on the DS?

Why?

perhaps i put my foot in my mouth, but i thought 3/4 ton 44's were closer to a 60 and 1/2 ton 44's were barely better than a 30? i'm guessing i'm wrong with your reaction like that...

3/4 ton 44's have 1/2" wall tubes. 1/2 ton 44's have 1/4"-3/8" wall tubes. i also think its alot easier to work around a leaf spring mount (easily trimmable) then a cast radius arm mount. also, a 3/4 ton 44 would have 8 lug beef and bigger brakes, but that point is moot here since its been 5 lugged

They are essentially the same. Mainly the only difference is 3/4 had flat top knuckles, larger brakes, 3" wide axles tubes (vs. the 2 3/4" wide for the F100 and F150s) and an 8 lug pattern.

Oh, and either way, they are both better than a D30. The D30 came on a vehicle that weighs less than a 1/4 ton, where as the D44 is a 1/2" pick up.

3/4 ton 44's have 1/2" wall tubes. 1/2 ton 44's have 1/4"-3/8" wall tubes

My F150 axle had 1/2" thick tubes. Some of the 3/4 ton D44s had 2 3/4" tubes as well. And the 78-79 D44's with the cast wedges were the only axles with the 1/4" thick tubes.

I'll be buying a plasma cutter before a bandsaw. Although, having a dedicated metal bandsaw would be sweet.
