THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

why SK? it's good, but isn't snap on better? i know you said you can get SK cheaper... i'm not a fan of SK's ratchets...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

does anyone have a metric 12 x 1.5mm tap? preferably local/that i can borrow for a few days?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so do most stores... blah. i want a tap n die set but can't afford to go drop the coin on one...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i cant deal with how overpriced snapon is. for $140 i got all those 3/8's sockets from sk, same price at snapon woulda got me a quarter of that set. also, theyre all lifetime stuff and its easier for me to go to a couple local stores to get a new socket if i break it then try to find a snapon truck. its even harder to find one on the weekend, whereas the tool stores are open and have them in stock. yeah snapon stuff is great, but for things like sockets, these sk's will do fine. ive been using all sk impacts and wrenchs for the past few years and have been very impressed. i agree with anthony though, i dont really like the ratchet

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

meh, craftsman is fine for me. i have their good ratchets and the sockets have served me fine..

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

... a set of 1/2" drive metric impacts....

How much did those run you? Where did you find the best price? I need some metric impacts.

When do you need it? I might have it. I've got a really good SAE tap set, but my metric stuff is kinda limited to the smaller stuff. Right hand? I'll look when I get back Friday evening. What do you need it for?

I would have agreed with you two years ago. Recently all this "Made in China" junk had been ruining the name and my tool collection. :(
Still 90% of my hand tools are craftsman. I wouldn't buy anything other than hand tools from them.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i would need it sometime this weekend while my jeep is apart. the hole in the axle tube that the breather goes into has a bolt with similar diameter but coarse threads or it's SAE or something... anyway, it's not the right one, the threads are messed up, but not so messed that i need to do a helicoil. i might pick up a small metric tap set on my way home tonight, but i'd really rather get a big set or nothing at all.

i bought my set just before they went to the pretty numbers and stuff, so most of my stuff is still the old style. i do have some of the new ones though in 1/2" drive, 6 pt variety and they're fine too. the breaker bar pisses me off though, it's such a POS.

I hear ya. If you are retapping the breather, why not go SAE? Do you already have the bolt or something?

Same here and agree. The older stuff without the crappy "easy read" sockets that end up rubbing/scratching off are great. The few that I've broken and replaced are junk, especially the 12pts.

i was going to acquire one at the yard on saturday... i thought of getting a SAE breather bolt, but i wouldn't know where/how to do that

yeah i've wore the chrome coating off of the good 3/8" drive and returned it cuz it was rusty. they didn't take a second look. i need to start going to the other one though, so they don't get suspicious.

Ouch, honestly I have no idea where you could get one by the weekend.
Which axle and what style is it?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

8.25... what do you mean what style? my grandfather has a lathe, but i'd rather not waste my time with that. i could use a banjo bolt from a brake caliper and drill through the head maybe... those have fine threads though... and probably metric.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

You could always just drill and tap it to a common size thread that they make vent breathers for.

Make sure it is a common size. I wasn't thinking when I tapped my rear D44, I just measured the hole, and tapped it to 7/16-14 as it was a perfect fit. I ended up having to make my own vent breather. Good thing I have access to a lathe. (I already had the shafts all back in and it all oiled up and under my Jeep when I realized it, so thats why I didn't redrill and tap it)

I apparently don't have a picture up right now on my photobucket, I'll get one later.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i actually might have the tap you're looking for anthony. you needed it this weekend? i'll let you know wheni get home, i'll check. i've got an OK Irving tap and die set and another pile of miscellanious taps floating around also.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

sweet, thanks kyle.

mark, i thought about doing that, but i wouldn't have the slightest idea what is a common breather size...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

battery dying on laptop in class... no plus nearby... damn.

12mm sounds huge for that bolt, are you sure that is the size? Maybe the MJ/XJ D44's are different, but I am remembering that bolt being around 6 or 8mm.
I tapped the fitting on the MJ to 1/8"NPT (tapered pipe threads) and just used a common straight barb fitting from any hardware/auto parts store for the breather line. I don't think I even had to drill the hole any bigger. The MJ D44 had a separate breather line though. The breather line WAS NOT the same hole as the mounting screw for the brakeline "T".

If its too much of a pain, then just drill another hole for the breather (and tap it to 1/8"NPT) and re-tap the hole for the "T" mount to the closest SAE bolt size.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

well, i got the axle from a buddy in my local club and it had a slightly larger SAE bolt that was put rather forcibly into it. there's enough meat there to clean the threads back to the 12mm... and i think it's so large because it's the same one that holds the brake line T. the thought of leaving it and drilling and tapping another hole. i know next to nothing about pipe sizes and that sort of thing, but the 1/8" NPT with a small section of pipe sounds pretty simple and i'm probably going to do that if i cannot get ahold of a tap. thanks andy.

Exactly what I was refering to as "styles". One is in the 'T', one is separate. Sorry for the confusion, I should have been more clear.

NPT taps are the easiest to come by.
It would probably be easier to have a separate brake 'T' and breather.
