Yeah I'd imagine for most people due to the back and forth on the price, then agreement, then inspection and all that, and then finally whenever buyer/seller can agree on a closing date.
Luckily our seller was ready to move pretty much immediately and met us within our price range in two days.
The bearings in our 40 year old dryer are finally shitting the bed. 10% off appliances at Lowe's so we're going to go looking tonight. I'm sure I could fix the old dryer for cheap, but I'm sure it's also horribly inefficient so this is a good excuse to replace it.

I'd look for a local appliance shop too and not just a big box store. If you ever need service on it (or the glass door for the front!) it make it very simple and you know what you are getting. The kid that sold paint last week and is now selling you a dryer isn't going to know much.
Also, beware it is just like TVs or electronics on Black Friday. The models may appear the same but are not. Or exclusive models the rotate bi-monthly that will make it difficult for parts later.
That is not to say they are not good just something to keep in mind.
We got a nice, basic, no frills washer and dryer and it has treated us well so far.

Why not? If the dryer is in your basement, and you are in your bedroom on the second floor it sure would be convenient for your dryer to send you an alert telling you its done. I hate going upstairs from my apt to the dryer only to see theres 4 minutes left. Most new stuff is all ZigBee compliant (the standard that lets your appliances, TV, phone, etc talk to each other ).
On that note, coworker is looking into getting some Wink stuff in his apt. CREE just came out with new smart LED bulbs... 60w equivalent, 25000 hour lifespan, $15. I keep telling myself that not spending any of my money is ok, because I'll have a house in a year or two and get to buy cool stuff for it.
