THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

I'd do as much as you can. I have R38 in my ceiling and R21 in the walls.
Mine stays pretty decent without heat. Last year when we had those below zero temps for the week or so it never got below 30 in my garage. Of course how long you leave the doors open has a bigger effect on it.

90k probably isn't overkill if you want a decent recovery time after you open the doors in the winter.

Edit: Just checked, R38 is on sale at my local HomeDepot for cheaper than R30. Go figure.

That sale isn't for equivalent square footage, I thought the same thing.

I think I'm going to give the blown-in stuff a try. They give you a free 24-hour rental for the machine if you get 10 bags or more (I need like 20) and for what would be an equivalent R49ish, it'll cost me about half of what the regular stuff goes for. Should only be about an hour and a half as well, which considering I have a lot of weird cut-ins and whatnot in the ceiling is probably just about as fast as laying it in.

I picked up 738 sq. ft. of metal roofing material today, which makes an unimpressively small stack on the trailer when you look at it. Enough so that you kinda think, *that* was $700?

However everywhere else I checked, had it marked up well over $1/sq. ft. even at the quantity I was getting, or couldn't get it for two weeks, and the place I got it from today had plenty of it on hand for $0.80/sq. ft, so I guess that's not bad. It's gonna be bright as shit in there too once I get this stuff up.

Got another 9 sheets of plywood to carve up over the next two days, two new circuits to run from the breaker panel, and then hopefully start the ceiling project on Friday, so I can get back to working on the damn jeep project.

What's wrong with the blown-in stuff?

I was planning on adding some recessed lights/fans to the upstairs bedrooms with the help of Nick and then blowing in a whole bunch of insulation to the attic.

The only thing I don't like is losing all of the storage space. I was trying to think if I could just throw down another framework of 2x6s or 2x8s on top of the existing rafters to have a platform over the insulation to store shit on.

Just that it'll be a pain to get it everywhere because it's not an open attic, it's where all the trusses are, and I'll have limited access. Plus if I ever have to take down any of the ceiling panels or add/modify anything, it'll all either fall out or I'll have to go up ahead of time and shove it all away from where I'm working.

Also, maybe unique to my case, with the soffit vents around the perimeter I need to keep those clear, so I'll hafta either block them off ahead of time or be very precise with the placement of the stuff.

What thickness are you trying to get? As long as the roof is relatively well insulated I'd say just pack it between the rafters and lay down plywood over that.

Still don't know what my plan is for traveling tomorrow. Might leave here around 345am, pick up my sister and hopefully be at the PA/NJ border before 8. I know if I leave later than that I'm going to be ****ed with traffic bc everyone and their mom is going to try and leave early now. Tarah's car isn't that bad in the snow, and it has new tires on it but I know I'm going to be pissed if I'm driving through the snow and I left my truck at home. I'll be on 80 all the way through PA. What do you guys think?

Maybe all your tears will melt the snow?

Also, I saw an ARB for your LR in the junkyard today, too bad the brush guard portion was rotted through on the top.

I'll tie myself to the hood and weep the whole time.

Damn, really? Prob could have gotten it for cheat. Apparently ARBs are junk for this truck, lots of pics of bent ones.

This one was rusty as ****. I'm sure it wasn't even worth pulling. I got excited when I saw it from a distance though.

Nothing at all, in some cases it is better. It is in my rafters but batts everywhere else so I can work / move / change as I want.

You'd want to sister them or build the other direction.

This is why I did batts in my garage. It was so easy to move when I added the speakers. If it was blown in I would have lost a lot and it would have been everywhere.

you could use great stuff or bread dough

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

no snow in southern PA yet...just rain. Kinda hoping it just stays as rain. I took a half day today to go to the junkyard.

Just dropped Kate off at work. What a wonderful commute that is

Time to get some sort of work done at home and then start cleaning for Thanksgiving.

Yeah that's why we wanted to do recessed lighting/fans in the bedrooms before blowing anything in. The old shit is all compacted like halfway up the rafters. I was thinking if I threw a framework of 2x8s on it (the other direction like you said) then I could probably throw an additional 10-12" of insulation and still have room for storage.

Adds more $$$ to the project but I'd hate to lose the storage space.
