Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Only 3 weekends left to work on the jeep, def not making opening weekend at f&f

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

What do you have left to do Rob?

I don't have much to "finish" on the MJ besides the dipstick. I've just been getting caught up with other dumb shit around the house that I've been meaning to do since we moved in.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Torque specs? I just snugged the bolts down on mine. Hopefully it blows up soon.

Half of the ones I've just gudentighted have broken, the other half have survived.

Half of the ones I've torqued have broken, the other half have survived.

Every time I try to draw a conclusion from which ones have broken and how they've been treated/installed/who sold them to me/etc, I can't find any patterns.

I dunno wtf.

Where do they typically crack so I can keep an eye out?

You might just have shitty luck, I don't remember doing anything special when we swapped Patch's AX15 a few years ago, and he beat the shit out of that thing without issue.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Dumb question but you do have the dowel pins installed right?
Yup. Made sure of that, though I'd expect to see input shaft, clutch, pilot bearing, and input bearing issues not broken bellhousings.

I'm guessing shitty luck.

The crack starts halfway across the bulge for the starter motor and then continues up and around from there. Last time (spring 2012 in the MJ), it broke so that the upper two bolts and passenger side lower bolt were on one side and the tranny + driver side lower bolt were on the other side. By the time I realized what was going on the tranny was literally held in by one bolt.

As far as I can tell this one's only broken to somewhere around the top of the bellhousing. Started by the starter motor again, hasn't come down the other side. I'll know more tonight when I rip it out.

Rear axle mounts need to be finished welded, like 20mins worth of welding, then some final cage work inside which I should finish tonight. And then there's installing bally pan and extending rear driveshaft. Then just re installing fuel cell and some paint. Gonna skip vermonster this weekend and gets shit done

I NEED to see your jeep in vermonster mud pits

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The only time I ever had a problem with an AX15 bellhousing is when one of those bolts that holds the trans backed out and got flung through the side of it by the flywheel.

Otherwise the AX15 bellhousing that bolted to my NV4500 lasted for 5 years in that configuration including all the racing, broken 231s, broken D60everything, stroker motor, etc. Guaranteed a torque wrench never got near that thing too.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

This thing would be a joke in the mud, at least rock crawling I can hide the fact that this motor is gutless

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so since we're all discussing AX15 bellhousings.

What thread/size/length are the bolts that just hold the cover on? My junk is missing every one of those bastards. All the ones that hold them together are there, just none of the inspection covre ones. Didn't make much sense, but what does on a second hand jeep.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

They are goofy self tappers. I didn't bother either last time, and didn't on my MJ either time, I will find them tonight and hopefully remember to get specs for you before putting them in.

Completely non essential, I just might as well at this point.

And from this day on Ken never cracked another ax15 bellhousing again.

If that's what it takes to change my luck, I am ok with that.

Never put them in the MJ's bellhousing that broke. Gudentight bolts on that one.
Never put them in the MJ's bellhousing that didn't break. Gudentight bolts on that one too.
Never put them in my friend's YJ bellhousing that hasn't broken. I drove the shit out of that thing for a few weeks before giving it back to him because I know he can't fix shit to save his life and didn't want to hand him a jeep-lego-mobile with something about to blow up on it. Torqued to spec, cleaned mating surfaces.
Never put them in the XJ, it broke in under two months. Torqued to spec, cleaned mating surfaces. The worst thing I did to it was jump the jeep a few times (never hit the bumpstops, soft pillowy landings as Sam would say) and drive about 70 miles at high speed on dirt/gravel roads. The rest has been DD duty.
