Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread
I remarked to Ross when we were putting it in that the fluid looked pretty nasty. We of course didn't do anything about it.
When I first started it up this morning, the pump had a slight whining, and when I went to turn, it started whining extremely loud. The fluid in the reservoir was a light brow color, and I siphoned the fluid and replaced it, the whining went away. Had to fill the reservoir back up before leaving the beach. There is fluid all over the trackbar, steering, axle, etc.
I don't know about rebuilding. If I did rebuild a box, it would be the original one that came out of it. I looked at the PSC boxes again today, and I'm torn. I really don't want to rebuild a box because its time I don't have, I'm lazy, I don't really want to go through messing with the steering box, the paranoia factor of "did I rebuild it right?" if the steering is still a little loose after, etc. I might just suck up the $215 and get a box that I know I won't have problems.
Hows this for luck. Last week, my dad and brother are out on our boat, engine dies. Turns out the engine is blown, no compression in one of the cylinders. Today, my Jeep sucks with the steering, my sister pulls into the driveway with my dad's wrangler smoking, tranny fluid sprayed all over the underside. My dad calls me up halfway through the day, the Taurus won't start after he put gas in it, I find the starter is dead. Stuff keeps breaking around here.
That's nuts. The thing was bone dry when I put it away and was full of fluid.
You could always rebuild it for like 20 bucks with all new seals? Can you just replace that one seal by taking the pitman arm off? I know you mentioned a PSC box but those are pretty expensive.
