This. I've done three shafts this way, including the rear shaft in red jeep. They always stay true and I've never even balanced them and its been fine to triple dight speeds.
There's a few machine shops around me that id highly recommend. Reid's in Whitman is where we dynoed and stuff the SBF for our stang, very nice place and very professional.
I bet if you cut two stock XJ front shafts in the tube (leave the ends welded) and slug it with some 1.75x.120 wall DOM you'd have a pretty straight driveshaft.
Worst case is you pay hundreds less to just have them balance a shaft instead of building one.

Colin, who did your head work? Your Uncle? Think he'd be interested in decking, and re lapping the valves on my TDI head?
