THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I want a job where I can wake up and enjoy it.

I *never* enjoy waking up.

I know what you mean though. On the whole it ain't bad...can't say I've ever dreaded going in there. Some shit is boring or annoying but lately I've been doing less of that as we're gaining a ton of new business and I'm doing more of this support kinda work.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm going to enjoy my next job.

Will it pay the bills? hell if I know. Probably not. :roflmao:

edit: I want this for the back window on the MJ so bad

Hmmmm, just found an "automotive devices design engineer" position up in NH. I think I might be updating my resume sooner than expected.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

oh, and as for my retarded 44 questions earlier -
what I am trying to do:
44HD, 8 lug (3/4 ton brakes), maybe high steer if I get lucky.

I have: 44HD out of a leaf sprung F250, with 8 lug outers, probably has good spindles / hubs etc in it, since they still turn just fine. I'd just run it, but I'm worried about the knuckles being so rusted they'll break. They are pretty far gone.

I also have: two sets of FSJ/chevy knuckles, one milled/tapped for high steer, the other not. Got one from Colin, was worried about how much rust was on them, got another set pre-milled and tapped, compared, and realized the rust was no problem. Also one set of no-high-steer Ford knuckles (from Keith.)

What I am trying to figure out: can I use the no-high-steer Ford knuckles with the 8 lug spindles/hubs etc from the full axle I have? I haven't checked the spindle bolt pattern / bolt count on either yet, that could shoot this down in a hurry or there could be something I'm missing.

Another thing I'm trying to figure out: can I get 8 lug outers and junk that will bolt onto the FSJ knuckles I already have? I apparently am not smart enough to figure out if FSJ knuckles are different 5 lug vs 6 lug vs 8 lug. I know my Ford 8 lug outers won't bolt onto the FSJ knuckles because the spindle pattern is 5(?) bolts on the Ford and 6 bolts on the FSJ knuckles.

What I'm really tempted to do: throw money at Carmelo until he gives me his 8 lug 44. Swap everything knuckles-out from it onto the HD44 I have, swap its knuckles onto his old axle (or include chevy/FSJ knuckles and stuff), resell it at a lower price.

If no one feels like answering all this that's fine, I'll dig around and see if I can find parts catalogs and learn this all the way I'm used to doing it. I really wish I just had a pile of data and/or axles in front of me to disassemble, measure, and swap parts around on to figure out what fits on what, because I hate only learning enough about something like this to put together what I need, I'd rather learn everything about it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

blah blah blah
So you finally came out and straight up said the name of the company with this little XXXX up? Or did that slip out?

blah blah rust blah blah
If you want to clean them up I hope to have a sand/media blasting setup in the next few weeks. Feel free to swing by and clean them up if you want. Not sure if I'll have a full cab or will just be working on a tarp but that's largely irrelevant.

ford's shit is 100% different than chevy/FSJ. there is cross compatibility between the chevy and fsj stuff, but not the ford stuff. the f150 and f250 stuff is also not compatible.

Having seen the knuckles, he's probably better off with a needle scaler, media blasting will have a hard time taking it all off. Ken, needle scalers are <$20 at HF.

Needle scalers are an excellent tool for peening welds.

Scott/others, I'm not worried about the rust being there, have you seen what I drive? :roflmao: Thanks though.

I am worried about how much metal is left after the rust did its thing. The knuckles are like 1/16" thick in one spot and that really does not make me feel comfortable about driving on them.

I thought you could put whatever knuckles you want on whatever housing you want, almost universally? And I know I've seen 8 lug FSJ stuff, for instance I almost bought an 8 lug J20 front lp44 a year or so ago but was convinced not to, and by the time I decided I should buy it and flip it, it had been crushed already.

I figured you can't combine, say, Ford knuckles and FSJ/Chevy spindles etc, but I wasn't sure if I could, for instance, combine FSJ knuckles and 8 lug FSJ spindles + hubs. The reason I thought it was even possible is that I've seen 8 lug FSJ 44s, so somehow it HAS to be possible, I just don't know how, or if it can be done with high steer capable FSJ knuckles.

Like I said, I am seriously confused by all this.

Valid point. :laugh3:

Think I may be picking up a new gas compressor that can push 12 SCFM for $500 and the wheels w/ tires for $300. Huzzah.

The Chrome on the wheels are a bit oxidized but they have a 70% tread life set of nitto NT555s on them which alone are worth the $300. Not to mention I'll probably be blasting the chrome off the wheels and refinishing them anyway. Run those for a year or 2 until the NT555s are toast and then throwing some winter tires on the wheels.

Now I just have to find somewhere with REAL fine blasting media... I don't want to make the aluminum too rough after blasting since (in a perfect world) I want to end with a polished aluminum lip. Since they will eventually be winter wheels I can live with just painting them silver and dealing with it if necessary.. but polished would be better.

ooo yea i misunderstood. yes, you can put any 44 knuckle, on any 44. you cant combine hubs/spindles off different stuff though. in my (limited) knowledge, all ford stuff is only ford specific. but you can combine chevy/fsj stuff... spindles/knuckles/etc. for instance, fsj/waggy single piston front calipers are the same as 90% of all chevy truck front calipers from like 74-late 80s. i think the break was somewhere in the early 70s... my friend has earlier calipers on his 14b than i have on my 60, and theyre both single piston chevy. also, the later chevy/fsj/waggy calipers are the same as caprice calipers, and you can use larger pads in them. i have them on my 60, i cant for the life of my find the paper i had with all the part numbers on them.

this is what I am super afraid of having happen to me. Lord help me if I ever need spares/replacements and can't remember what the hell I used.

Time to check some parts prices. I wish I'd bought that J20 axle now :dunce: guess I better wait a few more years till I happen to see one at the JY again. Either that, or figure out the Ford stuff.

I checked the prices on Reid parts and there aint no way in hell I am paying that kind of price, no matter how easy it makes my life.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

was looking at the rules for street night at epping

Cars & Trucks:
  • On Wednesday Street Night events street tires are required (DOT Approved racing tires are acceptable).
  • No bald tires allowed
  • Open exhaust is not allowed
  • Co-driver’s are allowed in all vehicles running 14.00 seconds or slower
  • Seat belts are required
  • Overflow can for radiator required
  • Battery hold down bracket required
  • .500 Full Tree using manual start
  • Vehicles must comply with safety and equipment requirements as outlined by the current NHRA Rulebook.
  • Vehicles must be street legal and able to pass state safety inspection
  • Nitrous oxide is permitted and must be installed according to the provisions outlined in the current NHRA Rulebook.
  • Valid state driver’s license required. Learner’s permits are not acceptable
  • Helmets (Snell 2000 or newer) are required for all vehicles running 13.99 or quicker
  • Drivers and co-drivers are required to wear long pants, a shirt, socks, and shoes
yup i think were all screwed on the saftey inspection part

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

just found this, dosnt help colin though

Q. Can I race my street legal car if it doesn’t have a valid inspection sticker?
A. Generally, yes. New England Dragway tech officials conduct their own safety inspection. Most of the time we find a vehicle does not pass a state safety inspection because of emission requirements. We do not check those functions. We’re primarily concerned with safety issues like seat belts, tires and windows.

Same spindles, different hubs. I have chevy knuckles, jeep spindles(large bearing) and the hubs between chevy and jeep are the same for 8 lug.
