THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

In theory, I can re-use my flywheel, clutch, and pressureplate. :D

I have to see if my father/uncle have a flywheel laying around.

Doesn't look like there's a difference between car/truck or even big/small block flywheels as long as the engines were internally balanced. Makes sense since a lot of the car guys put the magnum truck starters on their cars. (longer lifespan, more compact, higher torque)

Time to start digging through my father's part's stash

Sounds way more interesting then Colin or Chris talking about thier dildo stuff.

I know seriously. I wasn't aware it was the "lots-o-engines-and-adapters-and-colin-trying-to-be-a-mechanical-engineer-thread."

We do have a lots-o-tech thread you know?

back to work!

Yes we do have one.

We've just been choosing to post here forcing you to read it.

:D

I didn't realize giving my opinion on something made me a mechanical engineer. Sweet. Add that to my resume.

We gave you the opportunity to introduce a new topic last week, and the thread died and had like 4 posts in it all day. :dunno:

You and I are arch enemies, are we not?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Don't I have to agree in order for you to say that?

I don't consider you my arch enemy. Therefore we can't be arch enemies.

I can be YOUR arch enemy. But you're definitely not mine.

Sorry dude :(

Baller. Forgot that the 4.0 is the same as the 4.2 is the same as the 304/360/401.

Just found a scan of an old AMC factory blueprint. Looks like I'll be spending some quality time in Solidworks later today...

edit: XXXXer! The Y-coordinates are chopped off. :(
Any chance it has a drawing of the crank flange for the 4.2? I need to make a custom shaft adapter to go from that to the J609B input taper on my generator head at some point and I don't feel like measuring that crap if I don't have to.

I'm not an engine builder, but would a flywheel spacer affect engine balancing?

I would imagine that would be pretty important on something that will see 7k+ rpms.
as long as the spacer is balanced around its axis of rotation I don't see a problem :dunno: I would worry more about the thickness of the adapter plate XXXXing up how deep the input shaft of the trans goes into the pilot bushing/bearing. If there isn't enough coverage I can see the bearing wearing out faster.

Shit, I can get a smoking deal on a 4.0/AW4/NP231 combo but I'm not sure if it will all bolt together i'll have to machine some custom spacers and make custom length driveshafts and cut the floor up a bit and call Dannys BS adapters XXXX this just keeps getting harder

:D
seriously man. PS I have an ultra rare factory 4.0 to AW4 bellhousing available for sale if you end up needing it.

Stuck in NYC again. Welp... I drained the pipes, drained the toilet cistern, and poured some whiskey in my toilet bowl before I left to keep it from freezing :gee:

No it doesn't, but I have one sitting on my back porch at the moment. If it doesn't have the goofy offset hole like a 4.0 crank it'd probably be pretty easy to measure.

It's pretty boring, just some diameters, and 6 1/2-20 holes iirc. The holes are not in a symmetrical pattern though to keep the flexplate or flywheel from being mounted wrong. I don't really need their positions since I'll be using a flexplate to mark the azimuth of each hole, just the offset from center. If it's not in the blueprint don't worry about it though, I have a couple 4.0s in teh yard that I can measure when I get home.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Actually I'll probably measure it anyway as it pertains to my project as well.

The SHO motor uses 8 symmetrically spaced holes. I wonder how badly the two patterns will step on each other.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I *think* only 1 bolt hole is misaligned and the rest are on 60 degree increments, but don't quote me on that.

if so, you have:
0
60
120
180
240
300
???

for offsets on the 4.0 pattern, and:

0
45
90
135
180
225
270
315

for offsets on the SHO pattern.

Assuming they're at the same diameter, 0/180 line up... I bet 120 and 135 are gonna be a problem, so will 225/240, and 300/315.

How much space do you have to work with lengthwise? Any chance you could make the adapter plate thick-ish, and a crank adapter that has a SHO size flange/bolt holes/pilot on the 'male' end, and a Mopar pattern on the 'female' end? Maybe make a part with a large flange and dual 8 bolt patterns (SHO and one larger, around it) and another flange adapter that has the larger 8 bolt pattern and the Mopar pattern inside that, then bolt the two together? Not sure how I'd go about adapting patterns like that without ending up with a really thick adapter.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

From a convenient picture showing an SHO flywheel with a tape measure laid across it, the bolt pattern looks to be approximately 8 on 70mm (~2.75").

I forget what the 4.0 one looks like, or if it's close to that.

If it *is* that close, then I just get the existing holes filled and machine the SHO bolt pattern into it, and use a spacer with thru-holes if I have to.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ahh, I wasn't even thinking of just filling the original pattern in. Figured you'd want that to be bolt-together with all factory parts on both sides for some reason.

I think the 4.0 one was wider than that, like closer to 4".
