Eggster! :conceited
:D
I can understand that.

I seriously don't know how people work on shit up here without a torch.

I fall back on it for EVERYTHING.

I would not hesitate to get a pitman arm cherry red before pulling it.

I would obviously buy a new lower shaft seal as a precaution

They aren't whinny little pansys like you are, that's how.

:D

I'd rather cut the pitman arm off with a cutoff wheel and buy another one.
I believe I've done that twice now.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just curious, have you ever done one of those lower shaft seals?

On my list of "things I am never going to do again".

I'd rather cut the pitman arm off with a cutoff wheel and buy another one.

Nope, never done one. Didn't realize they sucked that bad.

Granted, I obviously don't have to worry about that on my jeep.

:D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Mark do you want a 97+ carpet that's literally in awesome shape? It's gray. One small stain on the drivers side right next to the console (could probably scrub it out).

My brother wants a new one in charcoal.

Not sure how much he'd let it go for but I can ask.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The pitman arm is off and on another box, I guess that means I got something done :dunno:

Very probable. I think it would look better in my new jeep with agate interior than a tan carpet would...

Have you ever wondered, who the hell all of a sudden decided to put a carpet in a car? I mean, if you think about it, its kind of strange, isn't it? "Oh, this new mechanical contraption is great, but you know what would make it better? Putting some carpet in it..."

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Dammit! I was gonna try and sell my 17-year-old one!

Yes. Drink a beer, and tape your next one to the top of it. Repeat ad nauseum.

This was attempted at NACfest but proved to be impractical while also attempting to play guitar, so we quit trying after about 6 or so. Given the quiet hours and stuff this will probably join the kegs as an activity to be only remembered.

Would probably be a good one for the next Fall Crawl however. :D
dunno, I think the new spot is sufficiently secluded to give us a bit more leeway. Did they end up saying anything about noise? I asked when I showed up Saturday morning and they said no complaints so far and that we'd been great.

Slippy roads equal rolled over cement truck on route one in front of my house.
FREE CEMENT, use it while you can!

I barely ever use more than a propane torch on a bolt and get mostly the same effect. And all I have used for pitman removal on my rusty shitty jeeps was the tool, a wrench, and a 3lb hammer, use the same trick as pulling TREs and it pops right off. I don't see why it's such a big deal. Last time I did one I had the torch sitting there waiting to be used because everyone told me it would be required and a minute later was going "well that was easy."

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

This is extremly amusing. Got some guys at the new place to cut down a big tree in the back yard, they got a super old cherry picker a old bobcat and a aold dumptruck there cureny destroying the yard trying to get the cherry picker out back with very wet snowy grass

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Nope, never done one. Didn't realize they sucked that bad.

So there's an outer seal, then a snap ring underneath it, and an inner seal. The outer seal is recessed at least 1/2" into the sector shaft bore and the flat part on it is maybe 1/4" wide, if not less.

Unless you're a gynecologist with a magical set of tools, you're going to end up taking the sector shaft out of the top of the box (obviously dumping out the entire fluid contents of your steering system). There's a washer that sits behind that seal that you can use to knock it out of the bore.

Then go back underneath the truck (after you just dumped all your steering fluid out under there), reach up into the bore with your snap ring pliers, pull the snap ring out. Go back up top and knock the other seal out.

Installation is the reverse of removal; at least in theory. In practice half the time you go to start the truck, hit full lock, and blow the seals out of the bottom of the box.

Think: diarrhea asshole explosion, out of the sector shaft bore. Hope you left the catch pan in place.

Repeat process, this time removing the steering box from the truck. (hey, at least it's already empty). Reinstall, refill, re-explode, re-remove.

Then you install the steering box into a large brown package and send it to PSC, and get a brandy-new-looking, totally tested, bad-ass ported, warrantied box back a few days later.

I just skip to that last step anymore. For less than $200 it ain't worth the headache to even think about working on one of those damn boxes ever again.

Alright. I've played that one before, possibly custom rules though. When I played you had to tape your own cans together until it was knee high. Once your staff was knee high you could get someone to help you until it's waist high. Once it's waist high you could tell someone else to just tape it for you. Winner is the first person to make a staff as tall as they are.

What? Eggs are awesome. I could go for a nice omelet right now.
XXXX yeah, I'm going to make a mega omelet tomorrow. But I have a muffin so I guess that's sufficient.

I did this, it made my life much easier. I've also done it without heat but just used a breaker bar and big hammer. Wasn't too bad.

Just curious, have you ever done one of those lower shaft seals?

On my list of "things I am never going to do again".

:dunno: I didn't have a problem with it. Then again I also had the steering box out of the Jeep so it made my life easier but still wasn't all that bad.

Someone probably put it in for sound deadening or insulation. Or someone put something else in a car for insulation and decided to cover it w/ a carpet.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So I have a feeling I'm going to have to raise the 440 up to get the exhaust to clear the frame rails which means hacking out the transmission tunnel (well...what's left of it anyway ).

That's also going to worsen my front driveshaft angle. Gonna have to call HAD on that one. I'm guessing some kind of 40º double cardan would be required.

I want to do a custom dash/center console at the same time.

XXXX my list keeps growing.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Thinking about doing this.. can I run the box without assist with the ports capped? My seal already pisses fluid...

I believe so. Call there and ask for Lance, and tell him you raced with me and want them to do whatever it was they did to vetteboy's XJ box. Bonus points for mentioning the bent sector shaft. :D

Would you be interested in my old ram & hoses? I might use the box again but I doubt I'll be able to use those. Ram is 1.5" bore, 1" shaft (beefier than the 3/4" most people use), internally limited to 7.5" travel, and I cut, rotated, and rewelded the fixed end so the ports point up.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anthony what time do you want me there Sunday morning (assuming you get the Jeep).

10 a.m.? 11 a.m.?

Hopefully not much later than that.
Sounds good to me. I'll probably be decently hungover and try to help Sam clean up a bit before you get there.

Time for a drop box!

Your transfer case is gay anyway. Obviously it doesn't want to be in your truck because it's trying to escape as it is.

Exotic, expensive driveshaft parts scare me. Your shit is bad enough now.

Put something clockable in there and be happy.

The best thing you will ever do in your life is make it so the transfer case and driveline and be serviced & removed from the top.

Needs moar doubler. Problem solved! (though you would break everything at once in low/low)
