If I connect via WiFi instead of 3G or whatever the hell it is, does that still count towards data usage?

Why should I root my phone so I can do that if it already came with those capabilies?Root phone -> Free wifi (or wired) tethering -> awesome!
OK, that's what I figured, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some kinda hidden thing involved.
I just threw out a decoy in the gear oil thread. This can go a few different ways...
This thread is getting awesome.
Your phone came with free wifi tethering? Mind if I ask what you are talking about? If I can do that w/o rooting I would love to know howWhy should I root my phone so I can do that if it already came with those capabilies?![]()
:dunno: It works and I'm not getting charged for using it. I only tried it once shortly after I got the phone. Maybe it's not free anymore. I'll try again right now.Your phone came with free wifi tethering? Mind if I ask what you are talking about? If I can do that w/o rooting I would love to know how
In order to use wifi tethering all providers require you to sign up for a service which costs something like $30 per month... on android phones there are a couple apps in the app store that allow you to use wired tethering for free but afaik (something may have changed in the past couple months) you need to root before you can use free Wifi tethering.
For a limited time, Mobile Hotspot and Mobile Broroadband Connect services are avaliable on this device for no additional charge. When the promotional period expires, you will need to subscribe to the applicable service to continue using this application
WiFi tethering = using the phone as a wireless hotspot that my laptop etc. can connect to, and access the internet via 3G?
