THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

It is nerve-racking holding a motor that I just reassembled, at a relatively high rpm for an extended period of time. I have heard stories of ecu's needing to "re-learn" how to idle. Any information I should know about that?

I've taken a '91 ECU off the shelf after sitting for almost 2 years and slapped it on my '92.

Started right up and idled perfectly fine.

So I have no idea why those people say that.

Maybe my ECU was magical?

:dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Forgot to post this earlier.

The stainless project last night went OK with the C25 gas...kinda dirty and the net result of using shielding gas with that much C02 is that you lose some (or most) of the stainless properties of the weld.

But, here's the project. Should make the first run today...we're expecting close to 170 proof at this point.
Sweet.

What would a better gas to use be? Straight argon?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm not an engine expert, but if you didn't touch the cam/lifters then I don't think i would worry about it?

Not to mention you're supposed to rev the engine to ~2500 for a certain amount of time (IIRC like 20-30 minutes?) with a new cam/lifters installed so I can't imagine you'd be hurting it at all.

Straight argon works better, but the weld won't penetrate as well.

98%Ar/2%CO2 is even better, 95%Ar/5%CO2 is acceptable for spray arc (not short arc).

Anything above 10%CO2 and your stainless abilities are pretty much shot.

The ideal gas is called Tri-mix which is predominantly helium, with small proportions of argon and CO2.

Looks cool.

No idea what that thing does.

Intwesting.

It doesn't seem worth it to get a bottle of something else unless you know you're going to be doing a ton of SS...

I'm not sure of the exact purpose, but I know what the end product is. :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I didnt touch the cam/lifters at all. This Jeep sat at my dads shop for 6 years without moving. That's why it was free to me.

I wish I had a magical ECU haha

Check the battery first.

Do you have another vehicle you can try it in or temporarily steal the battery from?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yea I do. It came right out of the DD xj i sacrificed to this project. Started every day perfectly fine in that one, but I have been cranking on it regularly over the past 48 hours.

It is too cold to ride my motorcycle everywhere.

This is a float hydrometer:

hydrometer.png

You fill up the plastic column with your beverage, and it'll float at a different level determined by the ethanol content. You can then read the proof off the scale on the side of the float.

The thing I made fills from the bottom, overflows out the top into the larger OD cup, then dispenses into the jar. The smaller OD center column allows you to float your hydrometer to monitor the proof in real-time instead of when you're done.

By doing that, it gives you a better idea over how much to throw away at the start (the 'heads', which is primarily methanol = the stuff that makes you go blind and the source of many urban legends regarding moonshine), how long to run the main batch for, and when to stop collecting. The proof will rise and stay fairly constant during the main part of production (usually 160-170 at this point), and as soon as the proof starts falling, it's time to stop collecting because you're just diluting it at that point.

Usually you'll then turn the heat off, and take whatever else comes out and throw it back in to get redistilled with the next batch.

Clear as mud? :D

Do it up

I actually don't know what the weather is there. I'll ride when it's 35* and up and no salt on the ground... More and warmer gear is the answer.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Chris - the big question. How does it taste? I've only had it once before.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

:woohoo:

I came home to a big box from ECGS. I opened the main box to find an ARB box inside  Inside that box was my lockright and wheel bearings. I keep getting ARB boxes without the ARB's  One tiny sorta error. Its a ford stuff so Im supposed to have 10 spindle studs and 10 nuts. I got 11 studs and 6 nuts :dunno: No biggie, I'll call Chase on Monday and Im sure he'll just throw some more in an envelope to me.

Time to go make knuckles!!!!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ive noticed that some cars you need to let the computer re-learn the throttle body position or else it wont idle.

mostly newer chryslers and i have noticed it on chevy trucks. happened on my 96 xj whenever i got a bad battery connection.

never had it happen on my 97
