Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

soon i can be a member of the GSD club. as for now, i am waiting on parts, and more paychecks.
Same here, at least on the jeep. It seems I never have time to work on it though I have too much going on with everything else I do.
Soon I will be going on rotation for driving wrecker too, so it looks like every 3rd day I could be free to work on the jeep, or flat out all night with tows.
I don't think I will update anyone on it, I will just mention it when its done.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just cleaned and organized all my tools from the mayhem that was the weekend. Thankfully, nothing is missing or broken. A couple sockets need to be exchanged for peeling chrome, but that's no issue. The only casualty was my mapletop. It got scratched and dented doing the SYE :(

and i broke your reamer

ken i have your jack stands and chucks, i can keep them if you want
oh, forgot bout that one. NBD. It still has a little more than a half inch of useable cutting surface :farmer:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Isn't that the purpose of having a wood benchtop? its meant to be somewhat disposable.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I laid down work mat things that I got from Jeff to try to prevent damage. They got separated a little and that's where the dent is. Oh well.

I never really thought of this top being disposable. It might be worn out by the time I'm 75, if I don't take care of it...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anthony, quite worrying about your tools and stuff when you're 75. Your not 75 for another 50ish years, worry about it then.

I don't think I'm quite ready to quit worrying about them. I don't like it when my nice things get trashed. If I don't worry about it right along, then I'll be 75 and have no tools.

I don't mean this as an insult, but do you own all your own tools or do you share with your father/brother(s)? I'm not sure what your situation is w.r.t. that.

about 1/4 of the tools i own are scattered around random parking lots across the united states. i borrow my friend's stuff whenever possible bc the stuff i own is shit and stuffed in a canvas back in a trunk in my shed.. with all the other crap that i saved from my old jeep. the only tools i have worth anything are my impact sockets, impact gun, compressor, and set of sk screwdrivers i got at a yard sale with sam in ri for 30 bucks.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My brother doesn't even know how to change a tire.

I own a decent amount. I have a Craftsman socket set that's in a blow molded box that I usually care around. All the vehicle orientated tools are mine, torque wrenches, and I'm sure there are a few more. Most of the stuff I do share with my dad, we'll be at a tool store together and we'll pick up stuff with him footing the bill, or he has asked if we need stuff if he sees it on sale. The main 1/2" drive SK set I use a lot was actually his fathers, and its been around since the 60s, and they still work just fine, not going to start going easy on them now. There are a lot of mismatched wrenches and stuff like that I'm sure from both him and his father.

Either way, I understand wanting to keep stuff nice, I completely get that and I do it myself. But there is a line where going out of your way to keep it nice defeats the purpose of having it at all, or having a nice one.

I have a stainless benchtop on my toolbox at work, and I look at it as disposable. Its already done its job when I had a garage door spring fail and hit it. The $1000 top protected the $10k toolbox. Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it cant have some degree of disposability to it.
On the other hand, sometimes having something expensive makes no sense. Take your benchtop, does it honestly function differently than some 2x12's bolted down? that's what I use, costs much less, and I m willing to bet I can beat the shit out of them, then replace them many times before I add up to the price of your benchtop

I agree, but you tend to come across as being so meticulous about keeping your tools perfect that it interferes with your productivity.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

It is funny because I was actually talking about this earlier in the evening when I was at the dive shop with my friend. He just bought a dive watch/computer and the guy was showing him how to use it since he had one himself. He was like "ya, I just got a scratch on it this weekend. You always try to keep it nice for as long as you can, and the first one always hurts, but then you realize its a tool and getting beat up comes with using it." We all agreed.

My Jeep was the same way, I kept it nice as long as I could, then I smashed it at Lobster's, and since then I've not really cared what it looks like, so I'm more willing to try harder stuff and risk body damage.

I got an unreasonably amazing deal on my bench ;) But just because I got such a good deal on it doesn't justify abuse.

Maybe I come across like that :dunno: Others have worked on things with me and never mentioned me being too anal about it... I'm not afraid to leave tools out while I'm working on them, I just like to keep tabs on them and put them back from time to time in the middle of a project. It makes it easier to find them too. I'm not talking about completely cleaning and reorganizing, just picking stuff up off the floor and putting it onto the work bench and tidying up a bit. During the project mine get used just like anyone else's, I just take the time to clean them up nicely afterwards.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

First! Annnnd wish i wasnt!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't even worry about cleaning up tools until I'm done.

Never oiled or painted our vise, still works mint.

Work bench is beat to shit, still works as a bench.

I agree with Mark.

I need em back at some point but its not too urgent.

that's exactly my take on things.

For a benchtop I'm probably going to do 2x12s bolted down with 1/2" sheathing plywood over it. Beat the hell out of the plywood as needed to get the job done quickly, replace for 5 bucks every 6-12 months. Never look back.
