what can i do to keep my carpet above my muffler from smoldering?

ive had a bad burning smell in my jeep for a while and just took a peek under the carpet and its all charred.

the muffler is about 2" from the floor. no heat shield (guess i could make one out of some aluminum sheet)

its not running rich, nor lean.

and the muffler doesnt turn colors. the header does on occasion, but i have read that this is normal

WTF, I'm supposed to be doing a paper on a flight that was delayed for 9 months due to the outbreak of world war 2 I believe, I also believe it was a Pan American flight, and I can't find a single bit of mention on the subject. I've been searching the net and my library system.

Scratch that, started finding a little info on it. It wasn't delayed by 9 months, but it ended up being the first commercial round the world flight, although it was unintentional. Had to flight from New Zealand to San Fran by going through Aus, India, Africa, NY.

Told a General Tire Rep today that the new Grabbers sucked because they don't come in 37's. I then told him how I wasn't impressed with how they chunked on rocks and the lugs would fold together and turn into slicks on the rocks. So he took mye mail and home address and said I might hear from them in the near future. I was totally bull shiting him because I wanted to see what he would say. :D I did get 8 koozies and pens from him though.
