Also, leave the pinion installed so that you can set angle and such when you are moving the axles around. The 5 lbs to gain from removing it isn't anything.
Pull the carrier, shoot some WD40 in there if you cleaned it, bolt on the cover and mock some stuff up!

I'll leave the D60 pinion in, but I'm going to take the D70 pinion out to get the PN off the race so I can figure out exactly what I've got. Maybe I'll put it back in when I'm done... I think you're right that a the weight of the pinion is negligible.

I've left both housings open. They're so slathered in gear lube that they won't rust. If I clean them I'll put on WD40 and their covers.
