Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I had to go to a funeral for a friend from HS this morning. I ran into him just over a week ago after loosing touch with him for about 5 years, talked about getting together at the bar to catch up, the usual. Now he is dead, died of an overdose on pain pills.
At the funeral I ran into a bunch of people I had hung around with in hs, but lost touch with when I went away to school. I figure XXXX it, I never took the chance to hang out with rich, I'm going to hang out with some of these other guys, because you never know when its going to be too late. Most of them were going out after the funeral for lunch, and back to someones house, and I had to get to work, so I made plans to stop over when I got out.
I get there, and most of them are stoned out of their XXXXing minds. They went from a funeral for a friend who OD'd, and got XXXXed up.
I wouldn't be surprised if I end up at some more funerals soon.

THe NAC Lots-O-Receipe Thread.

Sorry to hear about your friend, I know it sucks. I attended a funeral about almost 2 years ago for a friend I was close with in HS, but had lost touch with when we went to different schools.

I got :NAXJA: in my garage now!
I have this super sweet StrongArm mount too from my first co-op that was brand new, and they were just going to throw away.

I also put my Transfercase skid back on, and installed it correctly this time :gee:

I can fit my 2x12 just as easily, lol.

Hey Ryan...any thoughts on this, before it escalates into something out of hand?

That sucks man. I know what you mean, although I haven't had to experience it for myself yet - last funeral I was at was my best friend's grandfather 7 years ago, when he asked me to be a pallbearer because he didn't have that much family left.

:(

Really brings perspective to the fact that this year is gonna be my high-school 10th year reunion. There are many people who I thought were 'friends', who I haven't been in contact with since the day we walked out that door. Facebook has sort of brought that a little closer, but I'm still kind of cautiously looking forward to it. Makes ya feel old, ya know?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Haha, I think I realized I knew him, he realized he knew me, and you posted that simultaneously.

I actually met him way before I met any of you suckers. He has a green '01 4 door with AX-15. It was stock, low miles, and clean when I met him, and I came really close to trading him for my Jeep because I wanted a manual.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Went to an all you can eat rib place tonite. I really don't feel like moving at all now.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Sorry to be boring you guys with this shit, but I need to put it out somewhere, and this is the place for random shit after all

I'm going on 7 years. this spring, and I really wish I could say it was the first classmates funeral I went to. Unfortunately that came just over a week after graduation.
I Graduated with a class of 87 people, so far 13 are dead, not good stats.
Add to that the one who is paralyzed from the neck down because of a car accident, and another who can still move around, but when he dumped his bike, smashed his head, and 5 years later the doctors are hopeful that he may regain the mental functions to wipe his own ass soon, I count myself as lucky.

This is only the 2nd funeral I have been to for a classmate, the rest I just wasn't close to, or I found myself unable to get to the funeral. Of all the deaths, this one is hitting me the hardest. We were good friends in HS, shared a lift in shop, but after hs, I headed up to mass, and he headed out to arizona. We bolth went to UTI, and had planned on sharing an apartment, but he decided to go to the AZ campus after his mom died to get away from the area, and we just lost touch.

Big Ed's?

If so, my record at that place is two and a half full racks of ribs. And I weigh 130 lbs on an average day. I feel your pain.

Sucks though, because the first rack is fantastic, and for the 'refills' they start giving you the half-racks off the ends and stuff. Oh well. Still delicious, I need to get back there sometime.

Not a problem...understandable. My class was maybe 150 people I think, and I was familiar with everybody, even if I didn't know them. To be honest I'm surprised I haven't been in your situation more often...although I'm sure there's gonna be a few stories I'd rather not hear when we all get 'reunited' in a few months.

I know a few people I was in HS with are in jail or rehab. Not quite the same thing, but one of them was a pretty good friend for my first few years there, fellow Jeeper. Actually turned me on to the salvage yard that is owned by my now-best friend from college. The kid had a yellow CJ with a V8 and a 3-speed manual, and thought my XJ with a 5-speed was badass even though it was a 2wd at the time. After we graduated he got caught selling cocaine & heroin to high school kids, and I felt little sympathy after that.

Sidebar: this cider turned out awesome. Slow cooking rules. I just gotta remember to preheat it a little next time, but this is gonna be a great treat in the morning driving to work...especially with the inch or two of snow we're getting tonight. Nice changeup from the usual cup of coffee.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yea went to Big Ed's. Got the all you can eat trio. The first plate they give you is a full rack of baby back, half rack of st louis and half rack of spare ribs. Got one refill on the baby backs and I was done for.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Which one, the one up on 34? That's not far at all from my place.

I probably haven't been there in 4+ years. The garlic bread is such a tease; it's delicious, but if you eat a lot of it, you're not gonna have room for ribs. Part of the plan I guess.

I'm working on a rib recipe in my slow-cooker. Lookin forward to trying that one for sure.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yea the one on 34. It's the only one I think. I know they opened up one in Belmar a couple of years ago but it closed down. The bread is delicious. I think I've had my fill of ribs for the next couple of months.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah that's probably the other one I was thinking of.

When I was growing up, the best ribs around were at Southern House in Point Pleasant, but that burned down a long time ago.

Best ribs I've ever had, period, were at Charlie Vergos Rendezvous, in Memphis, TN. Dry-rub style. His place was in this basement under the Peabody hotel, and the walls were completely filled with celebrity photos and letters. My buddy's aunt knew the guy and got us in before the dinner rush for a complimentary rack of ribs each on the house, compliments of Charlie himself. That was during our cross-country roadtrip in 2002.

Sadly I found out that Charlie died recently, but his sons and family are keeping the restaurant alive and well. You can buy mail order ribs from them, shipped in dry ice. I've been tempted to order them before but I've always been scared I'll screw them up once I get them.

I don't intend to compete with Memphis BBQ, but that's one of the reasons I want to develop a kickass rib recipe.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ah yea southern style ribs are delicious. Gonna try to make some once it starts getting warmer out. Me and a buddy made some baby backs a couple of times this summer and they came out alright but we need to develop a better recipe.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

There's only only one way to cook ribs- smoke them low and slow. I have a dry rub recipe that I have just about perfected. It gives a good balance between sweet and spicy, and leaves a nice glaze on the ribs. I coat it on thick, and hit the ribs with some quick heat, it creates a sort of a barier and keeps the juices in the meat.
To finish it off, I usually make my own sauce using a honey and vinegar base with the rest of the dry rub. Pour it over the ribs 1/2 hour before you pull them out of the smoker, and have some on the side.
Probably the messiest ribs you will ever eat, but man are they good.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The ribs I had at Charlie's were truly dry - like you could eat them off the plate, without needing a napkin.

There was dipping sauce, sure...but the ribs didn't really need it. You could strip a bone bare by looking at it funny.

I'll have to investigate further.
