THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I want these from McMaster. I have no idea what phosphate Grade G steel is, but it sounds cool.

Black-Phosphate Grade G Steel Flange Locknut 5/8"-11 Thread Size, 15/16" W, 39/64" H Overall

$13 for a pack of 20.
black phosphate is the coating, think black oxide, looks about the same iirc. black phosphate might be the shiny carbony looking one instead of the dull black one.

I have no idea what grade G is, and neither does http://www.americanfastener.com/technical/grade_markings_steel.asp

Billy, I'm planning on being there.

Gonna be at the NEA meeting that day too. Figured it was about time to pull my own weight and it's at a fairly convenient location for me this time around. My only question is what the hell am I supposed to do, take notes or rabble rouse, etc?

Why flange nuts? Why not run a traditional washer and mechanical locknut?

Grade G is essentially the same as Grade 8.
Black phosphate is not the same as black oxide (duh look at the names, ;) ) Black phosphate is generally cheaper and more resistant to corrosion. Black oxide looks better.
I just might have to show up.
X2.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

we usually have a good showing at the worcester meeting, i'll be there too. The only thing to do is try and stay awake

I'm not sure I am cut out for this kind of task :wow:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Why NOT a flange nut?

Huh?

HOW ABOUT THAT?!!
Because flanged nuts are more expensive. If you ever have to take the link out you gotta replace the flanged nut vs reusing the washer and being able to just get a new nut.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i also just purchased some truxas STS, anyone know how they are in the snow? i only bought them because of the price and im sick of running stock bald tires.

WTF are you talking about?

I've reused factory flanged locknuts COUNTLESS times without issue.

A buddy of mine ran them on a ZJ for awhile and thought they did pretty good on anything with pavement (be it snow covered or not), offroad not so hot. They did wear quick though.

Dumb to reuse a mechanical locknut, flange or not.
Once or twice you might get away with it, but after countless times there is no more locking feature.

So have I, but that doesn't mean it was the right way to do things.

They don't hold as tight after the first use. I had a UCA nut work its way off a while ago. Never had an LCA bolt come loose though and I reuse those every time (if they come out clean and I didn't have to use heat.)

The factory flanged locknuts hold on the same way a pinion nut does, and "should" be replaced every time for the same reason. I just don't care quite as much when it's a few bucks worth of bolts involved (that I check frequently) instead of a few hundred worth of gears :roflmao:
