THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

what track bar do you have, i have a spare if you want to swap it out to see if thats it? i live in worcester now, so your a hop skip away
i'm in wolfeboro, NH right now :soapbox:

but thanks. it's a RE 1600.

i think the root of the problem is the steering box output bearing. when jiggled, i can see the axis of the pitman arm move laterally about 1/16". no amount of adjustment anywhere will fix that. it's time for a new box. the heim has next to no play, but for insurance sake, i'm doing it anyway.

Hmm, my 4 door's box does the same thing, but I've never gotten DW from it. I think mine moves about an 1/8"

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

it could be that that's stock and mine's not? i dunno, i've felt this for a while and couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. i've had a shimmy when i hit bumps for quite a while and it just got worse as i made the jeep taller. it wasn't bad when i was at ~3" but still noticeable. i think it's just gotten worse over time and with more height. does the 4 door have any more DW?

4 door = big green jeep. Never had DW. This is the one with the shot steering box that has the 1/8" play in the output shaft.

2 door = red stock jeep that I just got. Had DW possibly because the steering box wasn't actually attached to the frame.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

my bad. hm. i dunno. do you have a dead spot due to the steering box? your steering is also not stock style, so that could be worsening the DW with the output bearing being bad. it clicks and clunks around a lot. i dunno. any looseness in the steering is bad IMO. it could also be why yours likes to wander around on the road. just food for thought.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ya, it wanders because the steering box is bad, (getting changed in the next week or so, after the red one gets put back together), and the ball in the RE superflex joint in the trackbar still isn't right. (its actually a 1/2" hole this time, rather than 9/16" hole like the last time, but the 1/2" was poorly toleranced)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

hmm. i don't have any AAA batteries to put in my new handy dandy angle finder, so i'm going to get some tomorrow morning and check that. i wonder if my slightly bad drag link/trac bar angles with bad bearing and shallow caster are acting together. if your bad steering box isn't doing it... i'm curious to see if mine could. we'll see when i measure tomorrow.

DW sucks.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i need a new steering box too, how do you bleed the system? ive never really looked at it but i figurd i should ask to start finding out so i know what to expect

no idea, figured i'd figure it out when i got there.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Im not positive but I always worked the steering back and forth watching the pump to make sure it doesnt run low on fluid and keep doing it until the bubbles stop. You go stop to stop.

Anthony I couldnt get the arm off before the guy showed, I even put heat to it. Maybe I can just leave the drop one on.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I did the same as Jim, seemed to work alright for me :) :dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

what a long day. first off took a trip to Foxboro, got the axle from Ross, was a fun trip, the shop looks real nice too, then got home, grabbed my Jeep then went up to nhrockers house to get tires 7 hrs on the road total

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

awesome!! I love cruising days like that :)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

FWIW, i checked my hubs and neither has play. i really think it's combination of heim, steering box output bearing, stock steering, and potentially bad caster.
