THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Why are you going cheap on something so important.

Ok, but did you care about how it went back together? Nope. I actually tried pulling the entire thing first without removing it though, and it was a no go, had to cut it out mid lift, and sh*t got interesting
Brace it. Trust me everything moves.
That's exactly what I'm aiming for by removing the crossmember, I want stuff to move back to where it was before I hit that volvo
My engine + trans + tcase came out at the same time.
Sorry if I'm sounding harsh today, but I've been were you are before.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Give 'em hell Bill!!! :firedevil:
You too Ross when you dovetail that front end. :D

Seriously, the unibody really does move a bunch. I'm willing to be with one hand Anthony can grab the pass front rail and watch the driver's quarter move with the amount he has cut out.
Hey, guess what.

That yellow stuff in your cereal?

It's not spoiled milk. :nono:
Huh? Seriously, huh?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

What's slightly damaged? Dented splines?

Phil said:
Wow, this one goes back a ways! I'll have to look at what I still have laying around as I've sold most of them off. They are all aircraft grade 4340, we ordered the material ourselves and I saw the certs. What happened was that some knucklehead knocked them over when they were heat treating them and they warped a little. The guy that did the precision grinding for us noticed it and called us up and he shipped them all back to the heat treater. They "Fixed" the shafts by annealing them and straightening them in a press and then re-heat treating them. The press put dings in the shafts and flattened some of the splines. Like I said, I will see what I still have if you are interested and I can send you some pics.
I told him I would take one, depending on what the runout is.

I think that the things that I'm cutting a corner on with that shaft won't make a difference in the long run...

If I were to put it back together right away or if I still had an engine attached, I would have braced it. I'm completely building my jeep from a bare shell, so if it moves a tiny bit, it's no big deal.

I know you've built a lot more and tried a lot of different things that I probably will too but I want the end result to be something like yours/where Colin is heading/Chris's... I don't see any way to get it done faster than to do it as much as I can with as much out of the XJ as I can...

In common english.

Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? :D
Ahh... its Friday and I just want to go work on my own stuff. ;)

You know as well, it moves a lot more than you might think before cutting.

Fine, I'm done with ya'll twisting your bodies. Have fun! :)

Whens the next pallet fire and beer drinking cut-fest Anthony?
Jenn would kill me if it were tonight, though tonight would be a good night.

You're absolutely right that I can do that. But it doesn't matter because I'm not wheeling it as is.

I followed :kissyou:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I still have that whole stock crossmember in mine.

Ever feel how sloppy the fit is where that shaft engages the planetary carrier? A little runout won't kill it. The doubler kit doesn't even have a pilot or dowel pins or anything to locate the adapter plate.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I planned on filing the splines back into shape with a really small file until each side fit. I mean, even the ground bearing surface doesn't do anything. It really just floats around in there...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I need to pick up some new crap from my parts guy tonight, then do some cleaning, collecting of crap, and get the drivetrain ready to bolt together for the last time.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That'll at least let you feel accomplished.

 I wont cut the crossmember/inner fenders out until the rails are all plated and the front end is square and in place and braced and junk. I've also gotta work around my engine since Im not pulling it and will have to worry about some extra forces up there.

Jenn would kill me if it were tonight, though tonight would be a good night.

I cant this weekend anyways, gotta get up early both days for work.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I guess it's time to make a list of what I need to do.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think as soon as you get one piece done, you should make a build thread Anthony.

Whether it be the doubler setup or the rear frame or something.

Plus you can take more sweet pics.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken, thanks for the help last night.

My engine is out, coolant is on the floor, and a lot of work ahead of me.
And ATF! The gas disappeared fast though...

No problem, that was the fourth 4.0 I've pulled. It was the second most difficult - the most difficult was on cement blocks in a backyard 3" deep in mud.

The two easy ones were on wheels still.

Why make more work for yourself? 2 mins with some scrap and it would have never moved.

I still don't see why you cut that crossmember anyway. My engine has been out and everyone else pulls engines without cutting that.

Good Luck dude, it seems like you created more work for yourself than needed.
I was against cutting the crossmember when we started... for the same reasons. Pulling the engine is a hell of a lot easier and more fun with the drivetrain holding the jeep up, we were real worried about the jeep falling off the jackstands and cutting the crossmember made it MUCH easier to avoid that. Even so, with how the legs on my engine hoist are, we had to move the jackstands at the front far enough back that we were counterweighting the rear end of the jeep with metal stock to keep it from lifting off the rear jackstands. It required a lot of care, without cutting that crossmember I would have been sweating a lot more and it would have taken a lot longer.

Seriously, the unibody really does move a bunch. I'm willing to be with one hand Anthony can grab the pass front rail and watch the driver's quarter move with the amount he has cut out.
You're correct. We could flex the frame rails in or out about a quarter inch without much trouble.

I'd actually do the crossmember first... just my opinion, but it's easier to flex it back into position when the rails aren't plated yet. I'd be perfectly comfortable tossing the new crossmember onto Anthony's jeep, tacking it at one end, and flexing it to the right spot with one hand/leg while tacking the other end as it stands right now.

That's one of the big reasons I haven't started a build thread yet. I haven't built a whole lot, I've just taken it apart. I think I'll start the build thread after the doubler and flip kit are done or the rear frame is reconstructed. One or the other and one doesn't affect the other, so not sure which one I'll do first.

I will be taking some pictures, perhaps tonight... I gotta clean up first. The place is a pit... It was so clean just 3 days ago. :rattle:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My boss isn't coming in to the office today because he is golfing with a couple guys instead. I just got in the office at 9:30ish, shipped 2 drives, and proceeded to destroy the men's room on my walk back to my office. I have a meeting at 11AM. I predict little to no productivity happening between now and 11. I am also going to leave around 4ish (at the latest). I also predict little to do productivity happening between 11 and 4ish.

What the hell are you going to tie the crossmember to if you don't plate the rails first?

I plated the outside rails, built the front crossmember and the outer mounts, then I worked on the inside.

Measuring things while flexing things into position then tacking them while holding it there sounds like a 2-3 person job.

Unless you're Goro

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm going to put a temp support in the front xmember position before I do any work in front of the stock LCA mounts. But for right now, I don't think it matters at all.
