THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

You still have that goofy valve attached to yours? What a piece of shit dumb idea that was. Next you're gonna tell me you like ABS....lastara
well, I drive around with any amount of weight from 0 to approximately 1500 pounds in the back, so I figure it's probably wise to keep it. Right now the rear brakes are full of air and un-bleedable, the rear lines are a hodgepodge of terrible repairs and splices that pretty much make them useless, and the "goofy valve" isn't even connected to the diff, the adjusting bar disappeared and so it just swings around except it's being stabilized because I tangled it up in the diff vent tube. I'm working on returning the whole brake system to stock except for the fact that it has a WJ booster/MC in it.

As for ABS... I don't like ABS but I sure do like the fact that it gets me ultra cheap high pressure hydraulic valve bodies. I'm trying to find a way to build an electronic traction control "fake diff locker" with one ABS modulator for each axle and some lobotomizing of the ABS controllers right now.

just buy a locker

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That's not as fun and costs me a couple hundred per axle instead of about a hundred in parts for all of it. And yes, I'm aware of the performance differences...

:soapbox: WTF. i hate computers. i have a FEA model that takes 4 hours per frequency to solve and i have 12 frequencies to do. it overheated the CPU's sometime over then night and i lost all progress.

Wow, that blows. Ask the IT dept to set up the chillers properly in whatever datacenter your cluster is in maybe? Systems should not be overheating at full load.

I'm ready to destroy some ball joints and wheel bearings on my truck starting tomorrow night.
I'm not looking forward to doing balljoints on a d30 shortly... since I ended up with all this WJ junk after a spur of the moment decision to grab the hardware at the all you can carry ("huh, I need a long bar to tie all my stuff to so I can pick it up easily... oh, a tie rod would work. Screw it I'll just get a whole WJ steering/brake setup and figure it out later") I'm going to have to actually learn how to do balljoints. Still haven't decided whether to replace the pinion bearing on the d30 with 4.10s I got and WJ-ify that one, then stick it in the XJ, or finish up the turd I was polishing (not sure I trust my welds/fab skill, second guessing myself), regear it with the 4.10 Motive set I have, then WJ-ify that one, strengthen the LCA brackets, and stick it in the XJ instead. Luckily it looks like I have a while to figure out which way to go with that.

X2.

Ken, I know from experience how bad of an idea that is. Its called a poor mans locker, trying to use the brakes to lock up the wheels to gain traction. It WILL lead to blown up diffs, trust me. I know not only myself, but a few other people who have done it have blown up their spider gears.

Just get a locker, it is designed to do exactly what you want out of it, and will work much better.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Hmm... you raise a valid point. I was hoping that if I do it right, I'll have finer grained control then "hit the brakes" i.e. only the wheel that is slipping will get the braking force if I don't screw something up. Hadn't thought about how much weaker the spider gears are then the ring/pinion/carrier, and how much backlash there is between them which I guess is probably what would cause that kind of failure (plus the fact that they're spur gears instead of helical or hypoid gears.)

Mark has a point, and it's the fact that you're slamming on the brakes when a wheel starts spinning.

Picture myself jumping my XJ (as I usually do) and while in the air remaining on the win pedal getting wheel speed up to around 40 mph.

Now imagine said tire hitting the ground and immediately getting traction.

End result = bye bye

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah... hopefully this will be all Space Age Technology XP2000 and crap (i.e. if I do it right) and it'll tap the brakes as soon as it starts seeing one wheel spinning a *little* faster than the other instead of waiting till the wheel has built up momentum. It all depends on how much of an idiot I am when I set up the electronics controlling the solenoid... which means I should probably pick up some spare spider gears and a spare ring/pinion or two...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah... still thinking about that. I figure I won't factor that in, and will have a switch to enable/disable the "locker" when needed. If this whole stupid idea doesn't work, I can just leave it disabled or pull it back out.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

What trail is everyone going to be running at Fall Crawl?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Sounds good. Not too crazy. I'm game!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i like the part of some spots being tight, i hope there at least 90"wide:laugh:
Whoever is in front of Rob needs to have a camera mounted on the roof racing the rear. It'll be magic watching him get through an 80" wide section. People will bow.
