THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ok, makes sense I guess... and ten bucks isn't the biggest deal in the world.

As for the brass drift, I haven't bought a brass punch or drift or anything of the sort yet, I just buy brass rod/bar stock at home depot and cut the length I need then grind the point I want into it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah I'm not too worried about the quality of the indicator. I'm sure it'll continue to get used on little shit here and there. Then when I get my good stuff i'll only bust those out when I'm doing something important. Probably like rebuilding something not going into the Honcho...

If a brass rod is cheaper than $8 at Home depot i'm gonna do that. Not a bad idea. Otherwise i'll use the HF one and throw it after if I demolish it. It's only necessary for a small portion of the rebuild.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

What diameter do you need? I think I got a 4 foot section of 3/16" round for like $4-5, I've used it for about half a million different things so far. Prices on the larger diameter stock are obviously gonna be a bit higher.

3/16" is damn near PERFECT for driving the roll pin out of a d30 carrier, btw. As well as a few other purposes...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

As close to around an inch as possible. I'm going to be hitting it with a 3lb sledge so it will probably fold if it's too thin.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

oh yikes. Yeah a piece of brass stock that big is going to cost you a pretty penny, I don't think home depot stocks anything past half inch max.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'll check it out anyway. The HF punch is only 5/8" anyway.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Another thing you can do is get a ~1" copper water pipe end cap and stick it on a piece of black iron pipe or steel rod of about the right size, if all you need is a non marring end on a punch.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Possibly I have access to a ton of 1" copper pipe, probably caps too. Only thing is I wanna make sure I have everything I need by the end of today. So that I can lock myself in a garage and bang the whole project out by the end of the week sometime. After today I wont have any real time to go anywhere to buy this stuff. That's why I'm so seriously considering getting HF measuring tools. I want them to be in my possession. I can use them when I need them, not worry about damaging them and I can get them sometime today for cheap.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Option 2

Copper pipe with end cap on it
Borrow measuring tools

Take everything apart tonight and clean it. I'll know if it worked by the end of the night obviously. If the case doesn't come apart with the brass pipe and I don't find somewhere/someone to borrow from I'll have to wake up early saturday before work and buy the crap from HF.

That's back down to $0, which leaves money for NAC fest registration

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

btw, I just read on the news that Chrysler is bringing the XJ back  Apparently it's getting a V8 with a 12 valve CTD as an option. Didn't see anything about the suspension design though.
OMG KEN! You got me, I went looking for that in the news!
Also, a V8 with 12 valves? Which side gets the 1/2 a valve the intake or exhaust? I need details!

:D
Going to HF today to pick up a couple things. Also the magnetic base, dial indicator and calipers happen to be on sale. Seriously considering buying them. Colin said I can use his but it doesn't make sense to lug my tcase to his house and do it like that. Plus it's only a transfer case :dunno: WT tools and my work's tool catalogue have sets that I've got my eye on but it will be a few months till I get one of those.

Indicator- $10
Base- $10
Calipers- $10
Brass drift- $8

So $40 in additional tools to rebuild it?
I'd spend a little more than $10/ea for those.
Colin just got an "import" indicator/base for ~$45 IIRC.
A half decent set of calipers is going to cost you the same. Please for the love of god, don't waste your money on a cheap plastic $10 pair.
Brass drift, eh. Seems about right. I just use hunks of left over copper and brass round stock.
I honestly would not buy a dial indicator/calipers at HF. I like a lot of their stuff but for precision equipment I'd rather spend my money once and get good quality, I believe Bill recommended Starrett or Mitutoyo.

For rough imprecise stuff and consumables, sure, HF all the way.
Agreed, sorta kinda. ;)

I missed a comma actually... lack of sleep getting to me :o That should have had a comma after V8.

My calipers cost me either 20 or 30 at the college bookstore for my intro CAD class, I don't remember what brand they are. They're only accurate within a thousandth or two, but well more than what I need most of the time, I usually use them while doing amateur locksmith stuff and while designing footprints for PCB design using salvaged components.

As for the sorta kinda... their cutting wheels and flap discs, well, I'm a sucker for low prices on those. The only ones I have had fail so far were my fault, I either got them stuck in something at 10k rpm or didn't tighten the retainer down enough so the center ripped out. Oops, 70 cents, not gonna cry over it, grab another...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm XXXXing pissed, I just found out the input gear I have is wrong for my hole XXXXing setup. I need to track down a super rare dana 20 input gear to make my shit XXXXing work.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

man, that sucks. Is there any way you can track down a less rare TH350 output shaft that fits your current d20 input gear instead?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

TH350 shafts are not interchangeable with TH400 shafts. What I need is pretty damn rare. Funny thing is the gear I have is the only one more rare than the one I need, XXXXing gay. I posted up on ifsja to see if anyone has it. Hopefully someone does. Otherwise no dana 18 for me. By no means does this stop me. It just means I have to use a dana 20 with a 2.03:1 low range which will suck. I'm pissed off.

i have it. it has held up to the 3lb sledge so far. :dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ken, you haven't seriously been up for that long...?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yep.

It's about Mountain Dew time right now :shiver:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

it's about 6 or 7 hours past mtn dew time.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

For some reason I can stay awake till unholy hours of the night. I just have a rough time staying awake the next day. I only actually started feeling tired about an hour ago.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i will say that the [many] times i did it in college, i felt the same way. i was great till around 8-10 am then i started to drag.
