Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So I got a box today but didn't get the box I expected. Disk brake spacer shit came in. Now I just gotta find someone to install the spacers on the axle shafts. Aka install new axle bearings.

Not sure what's involved in installing disk brake spacer but doesn't sound that hard. Do it tomorrow, 15 minutes. Nothing takes longer than 15 minutes...

Shouldn't take very long. Most of the project is:

  • tear down 9" and remove drum brakes and backing plate
  • slightly modify the axle flange to fit the new disk caliper brackets
  • pull axle shaft bearing, put on spacer, press on new axle shaft bearing (this will be the only hard part... pulling the old bearing and pressing on the new one... not sure if I will be able to do it myself :dunno: May go to a shop and have them press it on)
  • put everything back together.
Edit: Well that's all I HAVE to do at once. The rest of it can be done over time, aka brake line, bleeding brakes, new prop valve (or pulling spring at least), new brake booster, etc. I just gotta get everything above done in one day (or wkend at the longest) since I hope to do it in the garage and have the ground actually be level so I don't lose much (if any) diff fluid.

Just cut the old bearing off with a cutoff wheel if it's anything like a D44. You'll need a press to get the new bearings on though, for sure.

or I could just bring it to the shop and request that they pull the old one and press on a new one. I just don't know of a shop open on wkends so I may have to take time off on a wk day.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

meh. :dunno: takes less than a minute to cut the old ones off and the race will snap/crack before you score the shaft so no worries there

I just realized idk what bearing I am buying anyway. Fawk. I THINK it's a 1.562'' Bore (2.835'' O.D.)bearing just based on a quick Jegs search but idk for sure. I event tried using autozone's just for figuring out what P/N to use and it was no use. Sigh

Edit: I THINK it may be this bitch, http://www.jegs.com/i/Strange-Engineering/873/A1023/10002/-1?parentProductId=746832 I'm just not sure. The only reason I think that's the one is because I took a quick tape measure measurement of the bearing spacers I have and they are about 2.125" ID and 2.75OD, so that bearing being 2.85 sounds close enough since my measreument was anything but accurate:dunno:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

morning NAC...

btw, I just read on the news that Chrysler is bringing the XJ back  Apparently it's getting a V8 with a 12 valve CTD as an option. Didn't see anything about the suspension design though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Stayed up all night, made sure BS homework is done so I can focus on Honcho related awesomeness. Tracking down a couple tools I need to rebuild my transfer case. Between doing homework I made sure everything I plan on doing should work so I can start ASAP. If everything goes smoothly I'll be able to disassemble the two cases tomorrow.

Welcome to the allnighter club...

(I've been at work since quarter till 10 yesterday morning)

EDIT: hahahaha yeah I'm way too tired to think up anything creative :roflmao:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I stay up till just about time to go to school every morning. Wake up 10 minutes late and i'm late to class everyday. The special thing about tonight is I actually got something productive and school related done.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Going to HF today to pick up a couple things. Also the magnetic base, dial indicator and calipers happen to be on sale. Seriously considering buying them. Colin said I can use his but it doesn't make sense to lug my tcase to his house and do it like that. Plus it's only a transfer case :dunno: WT tools and my work's tool catalogue have sets that I've got my eye on but it will be a few months till I get one of those.

Indicator- $10
Base- $10
Calipers- $10
Brass drift- $8

So $40 in additional tools to rebuild it?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I honestly would not buy a dial indicator/calipers at HF. I like a lot of their stuff but for precision equipment I'd rather spend my money once and get good quality, I believe Bill recommended Starrett or Mitutoyo.

For rough imprecise stuff and consumables, sure, HF all the way.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm looking at a Mitutoyo again don't wanna spend the cash on it right now. If a haborfreight is off by a few thousandths of an inch i still can still be within spec :dunno: I was honestly going to "measure" it be feel since some people do. Others strongly recommend against it though. I was looking at some Fowler stuff to but apparently that's all made in china as well. All their stuff looks exactly the same as the HF ones but they're twice as much so buying a mid quality tool to get me by wouldn't do me any good either.
