Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

.125 on a 110V is nothing. 5/16 and thicker is what's not doable. 110V welders live for welding .125 all day long.

but i'm glad you were meltin' metal.
Yeah, my 0.125 welds come out pretty nice these days. Even my 3/16 isn't doing that badly... but welding to d30 axle tubes is pretty much on the limit, have to take long breaks between etc with the heat cranked to 11.

So I go to do the rear brakes in my 00' XJ DD and I find that the driverrs side is still factory with pretty much nothing left but its so loose that it doesnt really hit anyway and the pass. side is completely replaced. Im not sure what prompts someone to do just one side but this thing had every part replaced from the backing plate out. In fact it was all still shiny, barely any dirt/dust, and I've owned it for 3 yrs. It wasnt used the first year. That and the fact that the shoes they used on that side had a slot in the middle a 1/2" wide that grooved the drum which made it real nice to take off.

Im glad its done though because it stops 100% better, that and I balanced the tires which it needed.
yikes! Yeah I can't wait till I get the new axle for the MJ in 3 weeks or so, got new perches and U-bolts coming in the mail for it, it's going to be great having rear brakes again. Right now it's kinda sketchy, it only has brakes in the front and drive power in the rear :gee: if I want the rear wheels to brake also I have to use the e-brake.

Time to go get a new TV, fix my windshield with my father, then poop some boogers for the rest of the day.
I want to see how he makes the windshield line up with the customized A-pillar, unless you're going to just jack/hand sledge it back into position.

sounds like a perfect recipe for a brake stand.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ken, how much are front d-shafts at the yard?

if theyre cheap ish like under 50 i need an auto front shaft from an xj and if the auto front zj shaft is longer than that i need one of them too. gonna bootyfab the 241 in there for now

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Jon - 20 bucks @ Sam's, plus the fee to get the junker put on a stand (I bring my hydro jack in and solve this problem myself nowadays.) Auto V8 front ZJ shaft is a few inches longer, I want to say 2-3 but I'm not entirely sure, check Dana's J321-CV catalog.

off to put the new headliner in the MJ

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yea im pretty sure the front zj shafts are longer

k my new order
1 manual xj shaft (not a huge deal)
1 auto xj front shaft
1 auto v-8 zj front shaft

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ZJ front shafts are longer, I have one in my XJ (when I put the drop brackets on, I needed a longer shaft, then when I did the HP44, I needed a shorter shaft).

And all this talk about welding makes me want to post this.

mmmm, TIG....

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Nice tv Colin. I've been looking at a few there as well. A buddy of mine might be getting me a deal on a Vizio, I'm just not sold on it yet. I'm putting one out in the front room.

sweet weld, but it's old news. do some new work :twak:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

its soo nice out, then i just had to pull the nova around and go for a drive

then after 20 miles it falls outta gear and i have to drive home with half of 1st gear :thumbdn:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

headliner is out... and staying that way for now. I discovered why it tented so badly, whatever idiot put the windshield in last did a TERRIBLE job and it leaked along one edge and the humidity wrecked the foam. Some of the windshield frame is rusty so I'm thinking when I go to windshield world sometime in the next few weeks I'll bring my welder and some 16ga and spraypaint and be ready to fix it if they tell me they can't install a new windshield because the frame is too rusty. Hopefully they'll be OK with that... :eyes:

Oh, and they used crappy adhesive and the rear view mirror fell off the glass when I tried to move it more than half an inch.

Vizios are nice. I have had one for a few years. Their newer ones are even nicer than what I have, however I have no interest in upgrading my TV at this time :laugh3:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

anybody got a 1-3/8 socket for a 1/2" drive close to Brooklyn, CT i could borrow? NAPA or Advanced dont stock them and im out of ideas where to get them.. and i dont want to overpay to order one that im gonna use like twice

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Sears has em... I have 30mm and 36mm, no SAE above 7/8" though :(

36mm might actually work, it's only about 1.5mm too large. I got that one for removing unit bearings on my d30.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So I did an oil change on the car today and checked the air filter... somehow a mouse made a nest in the air box of my DD. Never seen that happen on a daily driven car before :dunno:

And I finally made the switch to mobile 1, the car really likes synthetic oil. It seems to be running much smoother and I went to 30+mpg in my drives to/from autozone to get a new air filter, all back road driving. Only 30 miles round trip or so, but hell if it gets 31mpg back roads then that's fine with me. :)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think it's official.. the Jeep is getting push button ignition soon after I get it back. I should get this, since ya know "it makes your car image into a higher class level such as BMW or Lexus". :roflmao:

Anyone know what the name of that magnetically operated switch is?

Edit: As I clicked the button to post the message I remembered what they are, need a reed switch.

Edit 2: Maybe I was wrong... I know reed switches are magnetic switches, but I thought there was one type that would be open until a magnetic field was applied (at which time it would close). It would then stay closed until an electric pulse was applied to it. Anyone know what the hell I am talking about and is it just a certain type of reed switch or does it have it's own name?
