The Frog Blog

pretty sure i saw you driving down scotts road off white rock road last saturday, if so jeep looks great as always

Nope, wasn't me. Last Saturday I took the Grand Cherokee and trailer to Tahoe and spent the weekend alone with my wife to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Left the kids at home.

We camped at Zephyr Cove, which is a nice place for trailer or tent camping. There were only about 7 other campers in the entire resort, and as it turns out, Sammy Hagar was there with his two huge RV buses. He prefers to camp at ZC so he can walk his dog and stay with his equipment.

The camp host told us that he had 10 front row tickets to give us, but he did not tell us until we were leaving Sunday morning. Damn! We love Sammy Hagar and that would have been an awesome show. We let the camp host know how pissed we were that he did not offer up the tickets at any of the many conversations we had Friday and Saturday. Holy crap, I mean who hangs on to free tickets, anyway? We were pissed the entire drive home.

Glad that you and the Mrs. had a nice time without kids.
FYI, every October there is an outdoor Venue at Harrahs South Shore that Hagar plays with his band Chickenfoot. Plan on going, awesome show.

I know this is not a Grand Cherokee forum, but I'm interested in your opinion. I ordered some Nitto Trail Grappler's and MB Gunner 5 wheels for my WK Overland. I don't like chrome and really want black rims, but I need to balance the rims with the rest of the trim. They'll be in later this week, just in time for my two week road trip to Moab, Brice, and the Grand Canyon.

I like 'em. Should look great on the Grand....better than black would, in my opinion.

Nice, I generally don't go for chrome either, but it's about what looks best on the car you are buying them for!

As it turns out, the new America's Tire Store in Rocklin did not get the rims in and I'm pressed for time, so I just had them install the tires for now. Drove to work (70 miles) today and they seem quiet and well mannered on the highway. Not sure I totally like the look with the stock WK rims, but they'll work for now until I can get back to AT after my trip to San Diego next week.

There is a bunch of chrome on my WK since it is the Overland edition. I really don't like chrome, but the Jeep does look pretty nice for a kid-luggin, wife-pleasing, trailer-hauling SUV.

I don't have much to write about in regards to my XJ. Today is the first time I drove it in a couple of weeks and it is as loud and uncomfortable as I remember. I'm being spoiled by commuting with my WK and it drives better than ever now that is has new Nitto Terra Grappler tires. Can't wait to test them out on the Moab/Brice/Grand Canyon trip in 10 days...

Wheeling season is almost here and I'm trying to decide if I want to spend $700 and do the Jeeper's Jamboree in late July, or do the Rubicon with another club. The timing works out for the July 28-31 and I know this will be one of their last Jambo's on the Rubicon, so I'm wanting to take advantage of that.

I'm also in the market for my next project vehicle, which will replace the Frog in a couple of years if my plans work out. I'm beginning my search for a late '90's or early '00 stock TJ (or LJ) Rubicon. I am planning to build it with a LA lift and 37's, but you know how initial plans can change. This build-up will also net me a welder and air compressor/tools, so I'm looking forward to the new challenge and pissing off the wife in new ways.

The kid (100k XJ) is looking into the Air Force Reserves but we can begin building the TJ after his initial training. That gives me about 6 months to search for the best vehicle for the lowest price. I guess now is a good time to start up a registration to a Wrangler forum. Hmmm, I wonder if there is an open RocknTJ name to go along with my RocknKJ, RocknWK, and RocknXJ usernames....

To bring this back to the XJ, I will be adding miniskids and taller bump stops before I wheel this year. I also have some trimming to do on the rear wheel wells, and will attempt to straighten the mounts on the rear JCR bumper. I might even consider swapping the rear bumper for something with a tire swing. Not sure I like the spare 33" tire in the cargo area all the time.

Well, I beat on Betsy pretty hard over the weekend. Here are a couple videos of it! :D

my hockey pucks worked surprisingly well(we blazed a new bypass with permission from the DNR, its completely legit).

I also need to swap my rear axle(locked 8.8)! :D

I figure since you put up all these pics of the nice terrain out there i would post up some pics/videos of our terrain. We all like pics/videos, right? :D

Thanks for posting the vids, Flexd. You are braver than I am...I just don't think I'd want to find myself in a ditch like that. Post up the video where you finally got out, or else I'll think you are still stuck there.

I'm currently sitting in a hotel in San Diego and missing the Jeep. Thanks for the videos. Keep 'em coming.

Actually I wasn't really in that much danger. If I would have done that anywhere else I would have been over! That ditch was holding me in there with the rear tire.. Rev could have walked you up that with the frog. I ended up backing down and all was well. I had a fun attempt anyways. Two other guys who were open/open made it up with some wide open throttle and luck. I just came at it too far to the passenger side and couldn't get my tires to climb up the wall on the drivers side. Damn, i need to swap the rear axle and regear up front but i have the time and not enough money thing going on right now instead of the other way around for once! I also figured out how to drain my cooler without touching it! :D

Woohoo! Two days until my trip to Zion, Bryce, Moab, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, etc. I won't be driving my XJ, but I will be scoping out runs for next year's wheeling trip and I'll take the WK on as many SUV runs that I can during the three days we're at Moab, Ut. The last time I took more than a week off was in 1987 before my year in Iceland and I'm not sure if I can handle being away from work for so long....I'm sure I'll manage somehow.

You have to test out the WK on some trails while you're there! Don't forget pics.

I'm Jealous! Have fun man and get some nice pics!

And just to reitterate............Take some pics! :D

Also, My buddy ended up buying what looks like a shorter version of the Frog. Its a 98 classic, has tan leather in it and all the goodies! Picked it up for 3k with a BB and 150k miles. I will get pics of Betsy along side his Jeep to bring back some memories for you!

I'll get some pics for sure. This trip began early last year with me and the kid taking our XJs to Moab for a week of wheeling fun, but it ended up being a full fledged family trip with a WK, new trailer, and dogs. Not exactly a great wheeling trip, but I will find some SUV trails and scope out the scenery and trails for next year.

I keep getting sent out on business travel and will miss my annual Rubicon Poker Run for a week in Herndon, Va. (Suck). My next Rubicon trip with the Sierra Chapter is also in jeopardy, as I will be in Ohio (Double suck). Deer Valley may also be cancelled for another trip and I'm waiting to hear firm plans before committing. Jeeper's Jamboree is at the end of July and I'm hopeful I won't be sent out, especially after forking over so much $$. This was supposed to be my year for wheeling.

Sean, I am planning on the DV run and so far my schedule is open for that. Work has been sending me all over lately and life has been a challenge.

We left for the BAV (big ass vacation) Friday morning and drove to Barstow for the first night. For anyone interest there is some wheeling trails in nearby Calico, as featured inthis month's Cal4Wheel magazine.

After that quick stop, we headed for 2 nights in Zion National park. We did manage to stop at the Pawn Stars shop in Vegas on the way there and that might be one of the cooler things we will do. LOL

Zion is amazing with it's massive sandstone cliffs and great hiking trails. 96 degrees and windy but spectacular. We are packing up for Bryce Canyon now and will be there by lunchtime. More later...

I love it there. Bryce Canyon is one of the most memorable places I have been. Great hiking, have fun.
Agreed. We did the Sunrise to Sunset trail today and thought it was spectacular. We are on our way to inspiration point for some shots of the Milky Way. Should be amazing.

Tomorrow is a quick overnight stop at the Grand Canyon.
