99 Cherokee XJ randomly cuts power not getting code

So I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ and as I will be driving it the engine will stop. It will be able to drive fine for about 5 minutes then the engine will stop, I have to pullover it takes around 10 minutes before I can start the engine again and then this repeats. I am not getting code to see what the issue may be. I've seen a lot of people talk about having a problem like mine and say that the crankshaft sensor is the issue, I have replaced the senor twice and the Jeeps engine still stops while driving it. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem.

Here is a thought, because I had the same problem. Check the plug to the coil. On mine it kept doing the same thing and poking around it I found that the connections in the plug were loose. It would get worse as the engine heated up. I would let the engine warm up and try wiggling the plug, see if it wants to cut out.

If it does, pull the ac compressor off of it's mounts so you have room to work, take the plug on the wiring harness apart and lightly squeeze the female connectors inside to reduce the diameter of the slightly.

This worked on my 95.

What brand CPS did you buy and from where?

During that "10 minute" period, does it still have spark?

Crown Automotive CPS I bought from Autozone and yes it does still have spark.

Basically while I'm driving the engine will start losing power and it starts trying to idle while I have my foot on the accelerator just to stay on. Once I take my foot off the accelerator the engines dies. Yesterday I did a tune up and I changed the spark plugs and distributor. While driving the the power still cut. I even tried just sitting and running it at 2500 rpm but the same thing happened.

Thank you, I will give this a look and try it.

That sounds more like a fuel problem. Check your fuel pressure both when "cold and running", then "hot and stopped". Perhaps the pump is failing and stops. How much fuel do you have in your tank?

Quater tank and I know thats bad just wont be able to run to the gas station and fill up a gas can until this afternoon.

You need to perform some diagnostics.

When it stalls, what is missing, fuel pressure or spark?

What color is the spark from the plugs?
  • A strong, healthy spark should be a bright, blue-white color.
  • A yellow or orange spark suggests a weak ignition, indicating a problem with the ignition system
Did you test or replace the spark plug wires?

Did you test the coil?

Have you tested the CPS? Cheap crappy CPS from China can be out of specification or defective right out of the box.
