so i loaned my jeep to buddy in need. hecalls me and tell me that somthing has gone wrong and its coming from the front (maybe the diff i think, it was just put back together) so i arrive, on a dark side road to fine my jeep with its flashers. i look at the ground and see a dark fluid. my heart sunk bc i knew it was oil. so i look around to see if i can find the source........

Damn that ain't no good!

Wonder why it blew? Oil pressure suddenly drop off or something? How many miles were on it?

Well that's odd.....wonder how it can have oil pressure with no oil?

Same thing happened to a friend of mine last year...was driving down the highway and his 98 went boom for no reason. Oil pressure and everything were fine. Just a fluke I guess...

i checked the dipstick, its reading about a quart low! WTF!!! oh well i still have my 88 and she just wont die.

knock on wood.......

and the latest news is theres a 93 ho for sale for 150 bucks with 140k for alf like 20 from my house.

might be back on the road sooner then i thought!

Man that sucks!! Sounds like a plan is forming though...

because the dipstick and the oil pickup tube are on the low side of the pan where all the oil is. so for one instance it will read good oil pressure as long as there is enough to keep it going through the pump. once you idle it up however it will drop

i know this because i punched a hole in the upper portion of my pan on a rock and was able to idle around the rest of the day just barely loosing oil. once gassed it at all it would start to drain... FAST

How can it show oil even on the low side when there is those two big gaping holes in the pan especially the one on the low side all the oil would drain.

Sucks about you luck though, have you pulled it apart to see how widespread the damage is internally?

sounds like it's time for a stroker.

Being motor illiterate...What exactly could be the cause of such a failure???

TWO thrown rods? Good lord, this guy must have been beating the ever living piss outta that motor. Did it look like he took it off the street at all...like had a little fun with it before bringing it back? If he was a Marine, I almost would bet my next paycheck he did! Well, quick fix, my XJ is still for sale....... =)

4.0 dont like high rpm's. its a manual right ?

yes yours is for sale, and it is one hellofa machine but i have a wife and kid and the wife is deploying, so all that means i cant afford it :(

and far as i can tell the jeep was still clean (well as when i handed the keys over) and the spot on the street where to oil starts wasnt like a huge ass explosive puddle. it was rather small. i dont know what happend but he did buy the new motor and he is helping me swap em so its not all bad.

yep its a 5 sp. at first i thought he was slamming it through the gears and maybe missed one? but liek i said in my above post, he did pay for the replacement motor and such......

Good, at least he hooked you up with a new motor. Glad to hear that.

Suck that this happened, but you better jump on that motor quick. I've heard at least 3 people talking about getting that same motor but no one has bought it yet apparently. But if you got your 88 to drive why not go ahead and make a 4.7L stroker as the replacement motor.
