The Cleghorn Rant

Nobody's flaming you here, dog :). I'm just saying, I see a picture of a Jeep in a creek and I have to wonder how the heck they got there. I'm all about having fun, as anyone who's chilled or run with me will tell you, but I just thought I'd mention again that Treading Lightly is the way to go!

Nuffin' but love, brother.

theres two ways into that place one is crossing the barb wire fence and posts where u cross at the damn or going thru the river bed where u have to cross the water

I've been saying for two years that only the main dirt road was open, kids here don't want to listen.

You mean the graded dirt "main road"? There is a 3N sign at the bottom of one of the trail crossroads leading up into the "good stuff".

Someone draw a google map of what is really open.

Yeah, really! I've been wheeling Cleghorn for over 10 yrs. Now, if all you're allowed to drive on is the main "trail" (dirt road) what's the point in even going up there? Hell, you don't even need 4WD. I've seen way too many of my favorite trails get closed down by all the crazed enviornazis out there! Three in particular: Santiago Canyon in the Angeles National Forest which was a really rough (fun!) rocky creek bed trail, to save the endangered Arroyo Toad (where do they go when the trail is dry half of the year?), The middle Willows of Coyote Canyon in Anza Borrego (don't know why?) and the old Lockwood Canyon trail in Gorman.....they claimed vehicle traffic was endangering the trout population in the creek (which they filled full of dirt and silt when they bulldozed the old trail uprooting trees and brush along the way and probably killing quite a few trout by doing so) Sorry about the rant but, it looks like Cleghorn is going the same way. What ever happened to the policy of "a trail is considered open unless posted otherwise" ? Oh, yeah I almost forgot about Last Chance Canyon out there in Red Rock......more of the same crap!.......sigh :( ------------Hans

**Important Cleghorn Update**
Date: 10-04-08
Trails/Area: 2N47 Cleghorn Ridge Trail
Rating: Difficult

Waiting at the bottom of the by-pass was a pair of gentleman from the SBNF ORV Volunteers and their official truck. They told me that we were on an illegal trail and asked if we would please wait till the ranger arrived.

About 10 minutes later ranger "Kathy Pratt" arrived and privately got the details from the volunteers.

The volunteers said that any attitude would have been met with citations and that she has been giving them out.

Here is the lowdown on the ORVers at Cleghorn. The ORV volunteers mission is to educate, not detain. If they ask you to wait for a ranger, say no thank you and go about your business. Kind of amazing the SBNF allows this to continue as it is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

The "gentleman" you met at the bottom of the spur is Ranger kathy pratt's husband and one of his buds and they work as a tag team completely against the policies of the SBNF volunteers. From what I understand, ms pratt was once an ORV volunteer herself, got hired as a Rec Tech and now with her husband who is a volunteer go out together and have their own agenda for the trails in the Cajon area.

Most of the volunteers for ORV are great and helpful, but it only takes a couple bad eggs to make a volunteer group look bad.

Talking with some of the other volunteers in the SBNF, most have literally bailed from that part of the forest do to the antics of these two.

But it was nice that they told you how to get out of any citiation written for being off a designated trail. Good luck in trying to figure out what trail is legit on what day and of course it differs from ranger to ranger.

Wow... this is all getting more and more complicated.

Not that I ever would, but it's getting more to the point of "if you can catch me you can talk to me."

wut im thinking is it's a husband and wife trying to be the forestry Service and run the trails...:sure: what needs to be done is, Cleghorn should be open to wheeling and that is it. Were not putting animals in danger or destroying there homes.

I agree. The problem is the whole "Well it's closed, let's not wheel there guys" attitude doesn't work anymore almost.

As they close more and more, and we just accept it, and move to another spot, pretty soon we won't have anywhere to wheel. Johnson Valley is getting a lot of support because it's so big, and I can guarantee you that if they closed it, people would still wheel in protest out there. Not saying go trail blazing, but damn, we need to fight back a little.

Now on the other side of that argument, the problem is that it makes off-roaders look irresponsible. Between a rock and a hard place.

x2. when i called the forestry department the lady told me that she doesnt mind it...its the environmentalist/ land management that has been wanted it closed for a long time, and sadly the forestry service has to enforce these rules:dunno:
