It's a 318 ZJ, so we're thinking either the NV3550 out of a 239/318 late-90s/early-00s Dakota or if we can find one, the 3500 out of a 318 Ram.

Nope, car-part. The XJ setup is doable but it's 30 vs 50 bucks (since we'd have to pull one at sams) and he'd rather spend the 20 bucks than have to hack stuff up and weld it. Oh, and I haven't seen a M/T XJ at sams in like 8 months now, and car-part pulls it so I don't have to sit on my head under a goddamn dashboard in the junkyard.

That purplezj method of using an XJ one looks pretty hack, though functional... you will be surprised to know that it is a little more hack than I'd be happy with installing on a jeep.
