Swell run in May

Do you guys have a plan for this run yet? Are you going to do a cross the swell run or more of a base camp with different trails leading to different areas?

Depending on how you plan things I might be interested in leading some sort of trail down there. Let me know if you are interested.

i was kind of thinking of picking a base camp and running circles from and back to camp, but nothing has yet been planned out yet.

From doing circles two years ago and changing camps last year, I vote change camps, but I dont know if I can go yet so it doesnt really matter to me. I lkied being able to see more things and getting farther south the second time.

Last year we changed camps both nights and it worked great. I think you can cover more of the area that way.

EDIT: Damnet, it's 2011 now. Make that 2 years ago.

Here is my opinion on the Swell. After doing several trips where we have base camped and run trails out and back and then last year where we moved camp from night to night I've felt that the trip where we moved location night to night was much more enjoyable. That area is so huge that no matter where you base a camp, it's hard to get out to a place, enjoy your time there and then get back. Last year, even though the weather sucked I felt we saw a lot more and did a lot more than we could have if we were going back and forth to the same camp.

That being said...if you base camp close to town somewhere you might get more of the Holiday Inn guys to show up. It's easier logistically to get fuel, food and other provisions.

You might consider asking the group as a whole what kind of trip they are interested in.

Either way, this trip has spiked my interest. If you guys want help let me know. As you know I know the area pretty well and especially if you plan on base camping and running trails every day I wouldn't mind leading a trail or two.

The PET run in August sounds fun too but I think your nuts to do a desert run in Aug. I'm going to Colorado instead....where the smart people hang in the summer :D

i agree with its harder to cover the area with a base camp, and you do see more moving camp to camp, but if there was a centralized base camp closer to the south end of the northern swell you could almost see the same amount, i've done both and personally doing either makes no difference to me.

and as for the PET run, not all of us have huge issues with heat. playing in the desert in aug. isn't that bad, try playing in the pheonix desert in aug. its worse.

Ok. I have a couple of concerns about this run. I'll voice them and you guys can take it where you want.

First off, I think it would be a bad idea to run a point to point run like we did last year with too many more rigs than we had last year. I think we had six. I think anymore than 8-10 could easily turn into a logistical nightmare. One thought I had to combat this problem is to possibly run two groups. Maybe start at opposite ends and meet one night in the middle. Another possibility would be to open it to 8-10 rigs, first come first served and then set up a base camp for those who didn't get on the list. Maybe in the fuller bottom area with runs over trails like DRT, Eva Conover and Fix it pass. Then one night we could plan to hook up both groups at the Fuller bottom camp for a big pot luck or something.

Thoughts?

ya we talked about that. i think we decided capping it at 10 rigs. if there are more people guaranteed coming then the whole two groups idea i like. have a northern group and southern group and have one big cookout\campfire 1 night.

maybe we just need to start a poll and see who is interested in coming, and if there is more than 10 we'll know if we need to run 2 groups.

just my thought

How many days are you thinking?

Also. You can start a poll. It would be a great starting point however as I'm sure you know, people will say they are going then back out and vice versa. A better plan might be to start a thread and say that you have ten spots open. See how many you fill. If it fills quickly then think of starting another group.

3 days

i'm gonna start a thread on it and see what kind of interest there is so we have an idea of how many want to go

let me know, if not i can change my plans since nothing is 100% yet and plan a route.

ok, i've been trying to figure a route in between helping josh, by chance do you know of a rd that goes from the devils racetrack over to the rochester/dry canyon petroglyphs with out having to backtrack a ton? i kinda wanna goto those but i see no real convenient way to do so
