ok i've finally come to the conclusion that i dont have the know how to put together my own stroker (at least in the time frame that i want a stroker) that and getting a shop to build a stroker would cost as much as ordering a 4.6L long block.... so whats the best place to order a long block from? i was looking at http://www.golensengineservice.com/ but i've never heard of them before? any advice???

I have one of his 4.6 its been a long drawn out thing not becuse of Chad but becuse my mechainc is sandbagging

every call I have made to Chad has been pleasent he seems eager to please and willing to do what it takes to earn your bussiness even offers lots of tech support in case you have a mechainc like mine

i have a 87 so mine was a non ho version but its suppsed to have 265hp

The 265hp output of the Golen 4.6 stroker is for the HO version. That output can only be attained if you have a free-flow intake, 62mm bored HO TB, header, and 2.5" free-flow exhaust.

i have all that cept the free flow exhaust is 2.25"... but the power is still lacking which is the main concern for wanting the stroker.... as far as the work my friends and i can have the old 4.0 out and the new 4.6 in over the course of a weekend at my buddies workshop... im just wondering how the quality of those strokers are and the parts therein.

ticket on mine says 265 he ported and polished the non ho head...

seems to be good stuff i ran the parts list by a few people and they said it was all top shelf stuff.

it cheaper in the long run that building it your self unless you have a machine shop

The parts list looks good as far as quality goes but the quality of the machining work and assembly are unknown quantities. Since they have a reputation to uphold, I'm sure they would have taken a lot of care to do it right. They even offer a limited warranty on their long blocks but read the fine print carefully to see exactly what the warranty DOES cover.
The $3300 asking price is a lot less than what Accurate Power ($4800) and Jakes Racing Engines ($4700) are asking for theirs.

price is the main factor in me considering buying their long block... so i think ill go that route. now i just have to wait for the $3300 :laugh3:

I got a block core and a 4.2L crank and rods from the salvage yard for around $250. I spent about $150 on pistons and rings. The machine shop total which included decking the block, assembling block, grinding the crank, resizing the rods, valve job, sleeving the valves, assembling the head, ran $1100 and included the master rebuild kit of all gaskets, bearings, and seals. I got a Crane cam and springs for around $300 IIRR. Other than picking up the parts and delivering them, the machine shop did all the work and the bulk of the assembly. Adding headers, injectors, and all new accessories, I had about $2400 in the whole build from scratch.

I say all that to get to the point that $3300 sounds like a lot for just a longblock. I'm just a cheap bastard.

So am I. :D My stroker cost me just over $1100 for parts, machining, and assembly. That's less than what AP and JRE charge just for their stroker kits and I have a complete stroker engine as well as my old 4.0 as a spare. Admittedly labour costs are much cheaper where I live so that helps a lot. I did a lot of the work myself including the head porting so that saved me a bunch of dinero.
Golen actually claim 260hp@5000rpm/295lbft@4000rpm for their 4.6 stroker, not 265hp. The reason for the high rpm peaks is the long duration CompCams cam that they use (218/[email protected]). That, combined with the modest 9.0:1 CR, explains why the peak torque figure is less than impressive for a stroker.
Sephrion, during the time that you're trying to save $3300 for Golen's stroker, you could cherry pick parts to have your own stroker built instead. It'll cost you a lot less. This'll give you an idea of the parts that you're gonna need:

why spend all that money on a I6 when for the same money you can have a v-8?

Because a V8 doesn't bolt into a Cherokee. A stroker drops in no questions asked...and looks completely stock to emissions nazis.

I'll tell you why a stroker instead of a V8. I was at the first climbing obstacle on Cliffhanger and it didn't want to climb the ledge, so I just gave it more gas and it went up and over. After I got over it, I realized I was in 4HI. It had enough low end torque to climb it in the wrong gear at 1500rpm.

Until you have wheeled with that much torque, you won't understand. Horsepower isn't the answer on crawling, torque is.

Umm, a well excicuted V8 will make plenty of torque, and likely as much or more than a stroker I6. Though I would still do a stroker because of the fitment issue, emmisions, etc.
