Spools!

Ok, URF Racing has my D44 now and is going to be putting it together for me. Among other things (click the sig!) I need a carrier. I'm leaning towards a spool, but I have two questions that are kinda related. This is for a longbed MJ, 120" wheelbase.

1. How does wheelbase affect turning with a spool? The spool (or a locked Detroit, or a locked ARB, whatever) will push in turns, and make the turning radius increase, right? Since I've got ~19" more wheelbase than an XJ, will I have less "push" in turns? Since my turning radius is already larger, is there less of a difference?

2. There's not a lot of weight in the back, compared to an XJ. What will this mean? Less wear on the tires, because there's not as much weight on them? Anything else?

I ran a spool on the back of my LWB MJ for a good while, had no increased turning radius or 'push' issues at all...it had a LS in front though.

Same axle in my XJ but with a lunchbox locker in the front and it pushes pretty bad if I stay on the gas in turns (while in 4WD) Usually I try to cope with that by being a tenderfoot in slick turns, but sometimes ya have to hammer down...During those times, I adjust my line-choice & plan to end up at the outside berm.

Tire wear is accelerated with the spool. The LWB may be less so than the XJ, but the tread wear will still be faster than with a carrier that unlocks. Hard to compare between the two Jeeps, because my 33" BFG MTs went from new to 25k? on the MJ and from 25k & (not much) beyond on the XJ. Most of the wear was due to daily driving, not 4 wheeling. Being lazy about checking air pressure is bad for tread life... Those tires wore like crazy when I'd head back from the trails w/o airing up.

Did you check ebay, if you are spooling it you may as well get an open carrier and weld it. URF racing may even have one of those in inventory.

Thanks Woody, good to hear specifics about the type I'd be putting it in.

I have been checking ebay a little, and been on PBB. Not much from either yet.

URF Racing...at this point, why not?
