So Cal desert rats

So I took the 86 from airport to the 10 and to washington at 65-70-75 with a little head wind and 105 ambient. The temp got to 228.2 bounced to 230 for a split second and back to 228.2. ( when I punched it from 70 to 75). Those number make me smile! After a week ago when I was hitting 240 on the way home! Mind you it was 110ish but still I am really happy right now. On the way home, with the wind and slight downhill I was at 222-226. After getting off at golf center, by the time I was back at my house less than 5 mins I was back in the teens at 217. I can live with these temps!

thats high IMO... my OEM rad that is 12 years old was keeping me at 214 all day out in anza-borrego and it was at least 105. thats with the stock fan setup and the stock trans cooler. AC on full blast too.

Good for you! When I am just cruising around I sit at 208-215 also. Its the freeway that gets me. I know I am pushing the limitations of my gear set with the 31" tires so I am guessing that is what causes me to heat up a little more on the freeway.

Mine will do the same on a hot day on the frwy, at say 75+ and throttling through traffic. Cruising at 70 it stays 210-20*. The way gas prices have been I've been doing a lot of cruising.

Do you have a spring in the lower radiator hose? They tend to suck shut if the hose is old and soft. I fought a overheating 93 XJ for months getting hot on the highway. Turned out to be the spring missing in the lower hose.

No, I don't have a spring, however I have replaced all my hoses with new gates hoses. They say the newer ones don't need them, supposedly. I have tried to check for the possibility of it sucking shut by giving it gas while watching the hose and it looks stable to me. The whole system has been replaced. I am thinking about taking the jeep in to have the block pressure flushed by a pro. I did one of the prestone home flush kits but I have heard the pressure flush works better.

So I went to larry's rad shop in cat city today and he told me to by a new gauge, he said the system I have should be running 195 at its worst. So I went and bought an autometer gauge today and installed that. Went for a test run and I couldn't get it above 199! Pretty stoked right now! Mind you it was only 100. I am going to yucca tomorrow so that should be a good test. It was saying I was running at 180 most of the time. Seemed kinda low to me but I had to rig up a setup to mount with a t coming off the tstat housing and then plugging in the stock sender and autometer sender to that. I think that its not getting enough water flow so I'm gonna move it to the heater hose. Anyways ill keep u posted!

O curt asked me tonight if I would put the fans back in!:banghead:........

So did You try grounding that sensor, Aaron? Did it change more than a few degrees?

I went and drilled and tapped the tstat housing for the second sender. It went really smooth and despite what I thought the material there is a good 3/8 - 1/2 thick. Worked great! I did try and run a ground but it actually pegged the needle on high when I tried it so I took it off and all is well. So here is the disappointment.....the gauges both read exactly the same. 238-240 with ac on doing 65-70 on the freeway when it was 111 ambient. So now I'm back at square one!

I actually lost my cool with the wife because I was pretty disappointed when I found the same temps and she stated to just forget about.....well I have a personality type where, when I have a problem I can't stop tell I fix it so I snapped at her.....by the end of the night she told me she was done with me jeeping.....too much time away from the family. Ugh! Well yesterday we talked some more and I explained that I really have only been spending a lot of time of the jeep recently because of this overheating issue and that this will not go on like this forever. Prior to this project I only went out jeeping a couple times a month and the only time I spent on the jeep was maintenance stuff. So the point of this story is I need to figure this out and quick otherwise I might be one sleeping in my jeep or two selling it. I am gonna try to limit my time on the project to when she is not around, and give her more time as well....gotta find a balance(thanks curt).

I am starting to wonder though if my heat is coming from a poor ignition system. My average tank is 100-150 miles which is pretty bad. Mind you some of that gas is having it idling in the driveway while I scratch my head a little but not that much. When I bought my jeep I put a new distributor in it, new plugs, new wires. I'm gonna figure out how to use the ohm meter I have and start testing sensors. What I am wondering is can running really rich cause you to produce extra heat? Maybe???

Running rich can foul the cat-con, making it run poorly, hot and MPG's will suffer.
With a ohm meter your testing resistance. You can get the values of most everything that has them on the internet. It will say something like ... test resistance = 135-165 normal operating temp. blah blah blah. It means set the meter to test ohms, test sensor, if it falls in between the low and high number (135-165 (numbers for example only), then it's good.

Cool thanks Paul

You and I have the same problem, we need to find brand new in the crate XJs and start on a clean foot!

That's what I'm talking about tone! How about we order one of the new ones from china! Did you see that post the guy put up about them. Some china company bought the tooling from chrysler and started remaking them with upgraded interior and all! I don't think they are solid axel though and the motor is different too.

Tool... tone... you'd just pound it too...

Aaron will HOPEFULLY get his straight... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ later.

BJ 7052 and BJ 2021. Apparently wiki says that chrysler did a joint venture with china to make the jeep and the last year it was made was 2005.
