small leak from transfer case after SYE install...

OK, so I installed my slip-yoke elim. kit about 18 months ago and ever since, Ive had this very tiny but irritating leak from the transfer case.

Is it possible that I simply over filled it when I reinstalled it and the excess is leaking out through that hole?

It appears to be coming from the shift rail plug hole. It doesn't leak very much at all, and I don't really see any spots on my brand new white driveway but it worries me none the less as I'm afraid I'm going to find myself with no ATF in the case doing 75 down the highway and KABOOM!!!

Here are a couple of pics...

So, has anyone else had the same problem and/or know of a decent fix for this? Ive already had to replace the SYE housing once as I stripped the threads on the original by over tightening the rail plug bolt due to the same problem.

As always, any expert advice is very appreciated...

PS - Just to cover all the bases, I posted over at JF as well so I'll apologize up front if any of you read this twice.

If I recall, I was thinking that there was an o-ring on that bolt when I installed my PORC SYE. I could be mistaken, but my SYE is not leaking. Thread sealant would be a good fix as mentioned above.

I got a leaking SYE also!!!

One leak looks just like yours.... the o-ring in the speedo got pinch and that is where ATF is collecting to drip off, low spot. Not a problem I just gotta go to the steelership give them 4 bucks for a new one.

My other leak is from around the yoke! I have tightened down the yoke and used lock-tite too... It quit for while but it started leaking again (that probably never fix it, I figure). I'm thinkn' I may have to replace the seal.. but its brand new!!! any ideas, tips or test I can try???

Anybody know of a write up on how to change the seal???

I have JB Conversion SYE for 231.

It's not uncommon for a seal to get pinched or damaged easily. To replace: Pull DS, pull yoke of leaking seal, pull seal with seal puller. Install new seal, install yoke carefull not to damage new seal, install DS. Go wheeling.

My 231 tera low unit leaked at the linkage connection all the time. Changed o ring, no joy. It ended up being the plastic spacer as well as the o-ring.
Till you get it figured out, when it stops leaking, time to fill it up.

Oh... theres got to be more to it... sounds way too simple???

Do I need to remove the housing for installation and is the seal pressure fitted?

Thanks by the by...

Mine leaks like that as well and I isolated to the speedo sensor by cleaning the case and wrapping the speedo in a paper towel and then wrapping the speedo and part of the case in plastic. I drove it around and the only leak I found when I stopped was a soaked wet red paper towel inside a clean plastic bag around the speedo sensor. I then did the following.

1. got a new o ring . . .still leaked
2. put some RTV sealer on the plastic flange of the speedo. . . .still leaked
3. Now I am thinking that the speedo sensor itself is somehow leaking.

I'm going to do another plastic bag and paper towel run to isolate this problem. Anyone else here find a solution to this???

Okay, tried searching, this was about the only thread I came across...

I have a leak from around the rear yoke on my TC. SYE is the HD one that Jeepinoutfitters sells (PORC? 4WD? Rugged Ridge? I dunno) but its the "standard" one for the NP 231.

My question is...anyone have a part number or source for the outer seal? Tried looking for it online, and with the help of the 2 good guys at NAPA here....but no luck really. Everything we're finding is for the stock setup....

Thanks!

Are you sure it is the seal around the yoke? I'm guessing this is an off the shelf part but how you are gonna find it is beyond me. I'd start by calling the guys you got it from. They may be able to help you with a cross referenced part number.

yep, its the seal around the yoke. I may have to call Jason up to see what he says. I was just hoping someone else had a similar problem (because mine has pretty much leaked from day one....defective seal? Defective installer :D).

UPDATE:

after doing more searching, I found the rear output seal on PORC's website. $6. Hooray!

PORCSYESEAL is the "part number". Hope this helps someone else in the future...

What's the big deal? Measure the housing for the o.d. and the shaft where the seal rides for the i.d. as well as the thickness. Go to any bearing house and get what you need.

Applied industrial or Motion industries is what I have around here.
