Shaved 60 Build

I finally finished my rear 60 build and figured I should post a couple pics. I started with a narrowed 35 spline housing. I wanted as much clearance as possible so I started by cutting the bottom off.

Here's a shot showing the clearance gained.

I mocked up and cut 3/8" plate.

I welded another 1/8 plate overlapping the butt weld to protect against peel-back problems.

Then I modified a Ruff Stuff cover with the bottom bolt hole moved up.

I had the 5.38 gears ground down .500 in diameter. Here's the old 4.88 and new 5.38's. There's .100 clearance between the bottom of the housing and the ring gear.

Gear set up was a pain with the reduced contact area but I think I got it close enough...

I had some 3/8" plate bent up for the truss...

Made a plate to tie the truss and housing together...

And finally welded up the upper link mounts.

Everything worked great except for the Speedway caliper mounts. I guess we're harder on brakes than racers.

It looks like the failures stared at the speed holes. I got some thicker brackets and added some gussets. So far so good.

How'd you handle the bolt hole for the new bolt location? Is that just a nut welded to the housing?
Billy

Yeah. I used a coupling nut with a cap TIG'd on the inside to make sure it would seal.

I was worried about the cover to housing seal since I removed the entire sealing surface, but it's been leak free for 3 months. I highly recommend Right Stuff.

I like those link tabs with the integrated misalignment spacers!
Where did you get them?

Spidertrax

if you look real close it's etched into the tab.

Welcome to yesterday. As much as you hate on NAXJA on PBB I wonder why you even post here.

let's see some pics of the whole rig!

It's a POS, you don't want to see pictures of it. ;)

I had just scanned the page and I was definately a day late... Oh well that happens sometimes because of my meds and pain levels.:confused1

I don't hate NAXJA or flame it on the PBB.

There is only one NAXJA it is a great site and the PBB should only be for the extreme XJ's since it is an extreme board.
They are 2 different worlds so I try to keep it that way.

It's like apples and oranges they are both good but very different.

The PBB just has a wider group of extreme rigs to learn from.

It's the newbies there that I flame and send here asking questions that are covered here almost daily. Sometimes I don't send them here since scrappy said they were better of at JU or JF. He didn't want to deal with some of the newbies that are a few quarts low on oil...

I had about 5000 posts from when I joined back in 1999. They were all tech answers mainly. One of the major site crashes lost all my posts and my user ID. I still support this site, but I get more of my tech on the Darkside or on some of the desert forums. I'm mainly in it for advance tech, fabracation and thinking outside the box.

I read this site daily and do contribute more tech here then there also.

Most of the tech I find online isn't new to me, but I have been into advanced desert tech lately.

I think this site is the #1 site for XJ/MJ platforms for 95% of the owners out there.

The PBB is a totally different world and the Cherokee forum there isn't really moderated so some other members and me do some self moderation.

Why don't you take up your personal problems somewhere else rather then jacking up Kaz's tech thread.

So did you take 1/2" off each side or total? Be interesting to see how it holds up. Nice shave job.

I was replying to Jess's post. Tell a moderater and have them delete it if you want. I could care less.

Kas's post is a good post, I like his lower and upper mounts he fabbed up. They remind me of how desert trucks build mounts.

How are the coil springs working out with the narrow mounting locations?

I took 1/2" off the total ring gear diameter. It was a lot of work for an additional 1/4 of clearance. Time will tell if the effort was worth it. My rear 60 now has 3/4" more clearance than the unshaved front 44.

The spring mounts are the same width I had on the old 44 that had been in for over 4 years. I run some old school Tomken 4" progressive fronts I cut down to get the height and rate I wanted. I think it works well for an outdated suspension. :)

I'll try to get some new pics of the rest of the rig up. Jes is right- it really is a POS.

Should be worth it. That's the biggest drawback I hear around here to guys that moved from 44's to 60's, some places you just diff everything.

Outdated suspension, is that like Twisted Customs outdated buggy designs? :eeks1:

Kaz won't give a sh!t!

I'm just glad he finally remembered us and posted pics of his D60 build. Hell, he totally destroyed that D44 back in May '07. Good thing it was on the last day of a week long kick ass trip.

Jon, what shafts did you use?

Nice caliper bracket.......... :)

BTW, I've tried posting some on the XJ forum on Pirate, but there's not much activity, and really not much tech. Plenty of sack riders going ohh and ahh over stuff that gets posted. Good group of core guys, though.
