SF peninsula roads

Hi,

Topographic maps show plenty of 4wd roads on peninsula, between 1st and 35th.
Are they all closed or do I have a chance of some fun not far from home ?

Has anybody tried driving there or does anybody know where to get information about the status of these roads ?

Andrey

The only one that I have been on is Gazos Creek Road. There is a gate at the 4WD part that is a hit and a miss if it is opened. It is usually open during the summer and during only weekdays. To get there you must enter from Hwy 1 and then it dead ends at a summer camp in the North section of Big Basin State Park. It's a pretty ride through the redwoods.

Hmmm - can you list the quad maps you have? It would save me some time the next time I get up to USGS in Menlo...

I've been to play airsoft with the Cimmerians a couple times, and taking Ormsby Trail from the summit is kinda fun for me - because I can go faster over it than most others. Reminds me of the "main roads" back home...

Do you know how not to "miss" on your way out ?
I believe the road beings and ends in the state park.

Have you ever met a park ranger while driving this road ?
I am just curios, what his/her reaction would be.

Thank you,
Andrey

They seem to keep the gate locked on the weekends to keep the crowds out. I have always found it opened during the weekdays in the summer. The rangers close it if it rains.

If it is opened they run through to make sure everyones out before they lock it. Friday is a good day to try it because they leave the gate open for all the kids to get up to the camp for the weekend.

The maps show it sometimes as through from the Big Basin Road but that is not correct. You can only get in there from the Hwy 1 side. It dead ends for vehicles at a summer camp. Bicycles can go on through.

Good to know,
Thank you.
