search codes and tips ?

Hello. Sometimes I like to come on here and attempt to try to search for some information I am seeking using this forum's search machine. However often I dont seem to have very good luck. I am wondering if there are codes to help aid the searching ? like for example - New+Shocks or "New Shocks". I want a way to search certain phrases, words in order, not just posts that include the keywords I type in.

It's a little spotty - but that's probably not your fault. I'm not sure everyone's spelling is quite up to scratch sometimes (whatever you do, don't start a search on "Peugeot" gearboxes unless you've got an afternoon to kill - it takes a while...)

On the other hand, I've not really used the search engine much, so I'm not sure how it handles literals and Boolean operators. However, I'm sure you'll get more results (and more useful results!) if you "delimit" your searches - instead of putting up "New Shocks", just put up "shocks" and take care of the rest of the filtering yourself. Just like the rest of the Internet - you'll also have to develop a filter for "what's useful and what ain't" on your own mind, but that's doable with a little practise...

in advanced search, you can just search certain forums such as mod tech or oem tech. you can also search for your keyword in just the titles as well which can help a lot.

most importantly, i love you and i wish more people were like you.

The search will improve a bit sometime after the new year when time is available to apply the newer updates to the forum software. Will is be prefect? I doubt it... but the searches will work a bit better I hope.

I have this problem too, when I search for a phrase "how to ......"

the search engine is kind enough to remove the words "how" and "to" because they are too short, and/or common, and so I end up with 400+ matches to whichever word or words I put after the "how to"

very, very frustrating, and have led to a few unnecessary posts by me, because I do not have the time or inclination to sift through the 2000 pages of irrelevant jawboning that happened to include the words "check" and "code"
is there a way the moderators can allow the search engine to search for the exact phrase I want it to without it deciding that some words in the phrase were too common, or short

who here has searched for 33 tire, and had the 33 conviently omitted because it is too short? or I6, V6, ID, OD, 3", 4"....you get the point...3" exhaust is right out!:rattle:

No, the moderators cannot do that. That is not a moderator function.

If the search also included "how" as well as "to", ..... trust me, you would never get any valid results.

Refine your search is the best I can offer. Topic specific terms are best, and do not use common terms when possible.

Just a quick look, but there are almost half a million words that the search goes through to simply display a result. And that does not include 3 letter words. :)

Only a half-million? I'd have figured five times that...

Isn't that why we (the FAQ team) are working on things - so that we can save wear on the "search" function?

Many are duplicates. If I was really bored, I would look to see how many variations on the spelling of the Pukegoat transmission there are. :)

WELCOME BACK GLENN! Not sure how long you've been back, but boy, did we miss you! :D

Thanks... I think. :) I got back 10 days ago or so... and I am moving Wed. It seems like I am never idle long these days.

Here is a tip that may keep you from getting too bored. You can submit a search to NAXJA with a URL, just like you can with the search form. The basic URL is:Where searchword is the word for which you are searching.

Here is a list of the extra search parameters you can add to the URL. When you add a search parameter to the URL you need to add this to the end of the URL:
&variable_name=value
Search field: Search by Key Word

Variable name: titleonly
Values:

  • 0 = Search Entire Posts
  • 1 = Search Titles Only
Search field: Search by User Name

Variable name: searchuser
Values: Enter a username

Variable name: starteronly
Values:
  • 0 = Find Posts by User
  • 1 = Find Threads Started by User
Variable name: exactname
Values:
  • 0 = Partial name
  • 1 = Exact name
Search field: Find Threads with

Variable name: replyless
Values:
  • 0 = At Least
  • 1 = At Most
Variable name: replylimit
Values: Any integer values

Search field: Find Posts from

Variable name: searchdate
Values:
  • 0 = Any Date
  • lastvisit = Your Last Visit
  • 1 = Yesterday
  • 7 = A Week Ago
  • 14 = 2 Weeks Ago
  • 30 = A Month Ago
  • 90 = 3 Months Ago
  • 180 = 6 Months Ago
  • 365 = A Year Ago
Variable name: beforeafter
Values:
  • after = and Newer
  • before = and Older
Search field: Sort Results by

Variable name: sortby
Values:
  • rank = Relevancy
  • title = Title
  • replycount = Number of Replies
  • views = Number of Views
  • threadstart = Thread Start Date
  • lastpost = Last Posting Date
  • postusername = User Name
  • forum = Forum
Variable name: order
Values:
  • descending = in Descending Order
  • ascending = in Ascending Order
Search field: Show Results as

Variable name: showposts
Values:
  • 0 = Show Results as Threads
  • 1 = Show Results as Posts
Search field: Search in Forum(s)

Variable name: forumchoice[]
Values: Do not include this variable in the URL to search all forums. If you want to search specific forums then you need to add an instance for each forumid. For example:
&forumchoice[]=X&forumchoice[]=Y&forumchoice[]=Z
Where X, Y, and Z are the forumids of the forums in which you want to search.

Variable name: childforums
Values:

  • 0 = Do not search in child forums
  • 1 = Also search in child forums

how do I find out about 3" exhaust if the number 3 cannot be included as a digit or as a typed word?

I understand that there is nothing the moderators can do about this, but what do we do when a single digit number is crucial to our search?

Nothing. You cannot search for a single digit number. I have pointed out some limitations, as well as some tips to help you. Aside from that:
  1. It would be an incredible drain on the clubs resources to include single (or even two/three letter words) char's.
  2. No crucial search would include a 3 in exhaust. Most XJ's would do fine with much less. If not, you could look in that "extreme tech" or whatever those fab boys call their corner of the world these days. :)
  3. If you really find the search and the related criteria so lacking, joining as a Member and voicing it in the Members forum or even bringing it to the elected BOD as an issue would be fine.
  4. You could also consider complaining to the developers at vB that make the software we use. My guess is they will be happy to hear from you.
Cheers
