two words for you:

torque multiplication.

there is more to numerically high gear ratios thatn trying to target vehicle speed and engine rpm.

hmmmmm....

sitting here trying to think of clever wys to get through to you.....

after 13 pages of this shit, I'm trying to figure out why I'm bothering....

okay, here's a serious question....

do you have a two-speed cordless drill at home with a clutch expressed in "numerical clicks"?

say a dewalt?

set the clutch to a medium setting, so that a fair amount of hand pressure will allow the clutch to slip in the high rpm setting....

now switch to the low speed setting.

pretend that the clutch slipping is your drivetrain busting. pretend that is the limit of its torquae capability......by numerically increasing the gear ratio, which is what happens when you put the drill in is slow speed, notice how it takes more hand pressure to slip the clutch. this is an example of torque multiplication at work. notcie how in the numerically low setting, which is the fast speed, it requires less hand pressure to slip the clutch....

yeah, that's your jeep.

if you get a chance to try this, maybe you'll understand what everyone is trying to get you to understand.

you might be impressed with your speed/rpm relationship, but taller gears has effectively given you a weaker powertrain (before the differential) , for the most past, than a similar cherokee with deeper gears.

I find it funny beezil that you keep trying to explain this to me like I dont understand what you are saying I got what you said the first time I still understand the concept now and I uderstood it before you started your feeble attempt at likening a drill to a jeep drivetrain. I dont care what you say I am going to run because I HAVE TO. So why do you keep spewing your bs just let me do what I have to do.

Well dude, looks like all the dirt you been shoveling outta that hole you been digging just fell right in on top of you, and buried you. Dumb move buddy.

C'mon guys. az has said he wants lower gears, and he said that he did see an improvement in the lower geared rig that he drove today. He also believes that the difference in trail capability isn't as much as many are telling him it is, based on his experience. He also has said that he understands that his rig isn't set up for the hardest trails.

What does this kid have to say for you guys to lay off of him? I know we got into the challenge thing, but there was an element of fun and entertainment in that, and it's over. I think the point has been made. He said the gears suck on the road, but he can run the trails that he normaly runs with the gears the way they are. He got outspoken and cocky, but for heavens sake, how cocky would some of you have been if you were in his situation? Oh, I know, some of you will say that you think your smarter than he is and would never have said what he said, but if we wheeled decently hard trails and were still young enough to be in college, some of us would be some seriously cocky bastards. How much crow do your expect him to eat before you're satisfied?

I say enough is enough. He's shown enough brasiness in standing up to us, that he has earned my respect.

az, you don't have the equipment to run with us yet (you see, we don't like to break down), but someday you will, and I would be happy to wheel with you. :)

Ok, now everybody hug. :smootch: :D

I was trying to be nice. The thread is long and maybe I missed it, I had the impression you still weren't understanding, since you seem to be convincing yourself there is no need, especially after reading your RECENT post about you trying your friends vehicle.

A tad more throtte isint a big difference that I care about

that was what you said before I tried hard to explain it in using an analogy that seems appropriate.

when you do decide to do gears, and there's anyway for you to choose gears deeper than 4.56, I would surely do it

.

I would actually rather go with 4.88s or 5.13s but the 8.25 if I remember correctly only has gears to 4.56

I think 5.13's are the way to go with aw-4 and 35's.

yep, I'm fully aware you need some axles to go along with it, but if you are patient, you can find some affordable junkyard scores.

Beezil, I don't know what the deal is. I know you witnessed the MJ doing the mad trailz with 35's, 3.55's, and a 4 banger!! :D

I sure did, but its not like any of us were worried that you'd break your powertrain with a 4-banger, and when you break in the badlands, yer really never blocking the "trail"......since there's really no "trail".....

gonna swing by attica this weekend?

even just to hang out and down some bubbas?

Hey az, I believe you are finally coming around to what I originally stated on the first page. Its great to know you are, as not many people are stupid enough to challenge the likes of goatman, Beezil, Oneton, Jes, crash, sinclair etc. Sorry if I missed some of you. I am only 20 myself but I have already learned that it takes gearing and finesse to rockcrawl and your gearing my get it done but it won't get it done right and without tearing up something. Listen to these guys they know what they are talking about. I am still learning a whole lot myself and one of the best things I ever did was listen to Beezil on a gearing question a long time ago on JU. I asked what the best gear was with 31s and eventually 35s. He basically told me 4.56s with 31s and once you get 35s get 5.13s Well I loved 4.56s with 31s and now I hate those gears with 35s. 5.13s are on my to do list .---------Kyle
