Rubicon Trip this Summer

I'm up for that. I remember spending alot of time finding that water tunnel last year. Any particular destination in mind?

I was thinking of trying to get to Highland Lake. At the first creek crossing (red X on map), follow that creek up for about 2 1/4 miles and there is a trail that goes to Highland Lake. It's about 1,100 feet rise over that 2 1/4 miles.

Or if that is too much, maybe exploring the ridge to the south of Rockbound. Looks likes there's a couple of ponds up along that ridge.

(Those are the green trails... 4 3/4 miles and 3 1/4 miles each)

If we want to get ambitious, the blue loop would have us scrambling up the creek to Lake Zetella... which may or may not be passable (we'd have to check it out), and then down the 2 1/4 mile creek back to Rockbound.

Or, if we want to get REALLY ambitious, we could take the green trail up to Highland Lake... then scramble up from Highland lake to the trail at Tells Peak... then north on that trail back to Lake Winifred and then Buck Island. I've done some research and it seems it is possible... but probably too much for a single day.

Yea, the hike up to Highland looks pretty ambitious. I'll be toting a fishing rod, so the trail that goes along Rubicon Res looks appealing. I know that Rockbound and Rubicon Res have fish, not sure about Highland or Zitella. Let's play it by ear, but I'm also up for checking out Zitella.

On the way back to Buck we need to stop by the waterfall and pools between Buck and Rockbound...much needed relief after a days hike! Hopefully the water flow will be like last year's.

Major accident on Cadillac Hill during the recent Jeepers Jamboree...

Of the whole trail, I remember sections of Cadillac to be the most challenging and unforgiving due to the steep drop offs.

I won't be able to make it to stone tomorrow night.

let me know what you guys figure out. I will already be up there for sierrafest, so I am down for whatever.

I'll be there ~6-6:30.

Doesn't look like we have a caravan. There were 3 of us at Stone who are going, and we are all driving up at different times. Art may go up Friday. I'm looking at driving up Saturday. And Vanimal is going up Sunday if he can make it.

We have the Red Fir Group campground reserved for Sunday night. It is right at the trail head and should be big enough for anyone who wants to stay there.

Map

We will stage at the entrance to Red Fir campground. We will meet there at 9:00am Monday morning and plan to leave as soon as everyone is there. We want to be on the trail as early as possible after 9:00, but no later than 10:00am.

I ordered a portable toilet and privacy tent to use on the trail, but you need to provide your own wag bags!! If you don't have any, please make sure you get some.

As of now, the plan is to go from Loon to Buck Island on Monday. Tuesday will be an off day to hike/fish/etc. We kind of left it open for Wed and Thurs. We may head out Wednesday, or may camp at Rubicon Springs on Wed night.

Art wants to run Fordyce after Rubicon, so if anyone is up for that... there is that option. I won't be able to do that... I have to get back to work.

I plan on being at at sierrafest in deer valley (2 hrs south) on sunday, but I will camp with you guys at red fir campground that night.

I am game to run Fordyce if my jeep can handle it.

I'll play it by ear, but trying to squeeze in Fordyce during this trip would be biting off too much for me. Maybe next year during the annual Sierra Trek run.

Glad to hear she only needed 3 stitches (I think that's what you said earlier). She'll be ready to chase off those Rubicon bears in no time :)

Sorry... I meant she needed stitches in 3 places. Chest, armpit, and arm. I changed the bandages this morning and counted 12 stitches... could be more.

This is probably my last post before the trip so I'm taking a final roll call so we don't leave anyone behind at the trail head. Mike (Oceanjet) is staying at the Loon group campsite Sunday eve. I may show up there Sunday eve or Monday morning, not sure yet since I'm still TBD on where I'm parking the tow rig. Plan is to leave 10am from Loon trail head, or earlier if we're all there.
We can exchange cell numbers in PM if I don't already have yours.

Scott (RedDevilGTO), I know you said you're working a hot project at work and weren't sure if you'd make it. If you go it sounds like it would be a last minute decision.

Rockclimber, you said you'll be at Sierra Fest and plan to make it.

Kensommers, you still plan on going?

I am in and will have 1 passenger. at this point my plan is to camp at the group camp with mike sunday night after Sierrafest.

hopefully I will get everything done on the jeep since I plan on leaving for SF tomorrow...

PM with a cell # inbound.

Not that anyone has asked but I will not make it. I still haven't received my rear axles from Currie. They said some time this week but I'm not going to pack to be discouraged so if they come in tuesday or wed. maybe I'll make it, thurs. or later will be a no go. Have fun and be safe!
