Since many folks have already shown interest in this thread , What about the weekend before ?
Pros:
Less crowded trails- And we would prefer to avoid drunk fest at moon rocks on a busy holiday weekend which means we would avoid moon rocks on memorial day weekend altogether, although there exists other moon rocks style options for us so don't worry.
Less crowded roads and hotels. Easier to find parking for rigs at hotels and less idiots on the road to deal with our lifted rigs.
Cheaper hotels on Non-Holiday weekends.
2 weekends off in a row (you can do something else on memorial day weekend now)
Cons:
Folks might be more likely to have time off for memorial day so it might be easier to justify going
Most people get a room at a cheap hotel like Circus Circus. You can camp at Moon Rocks, ask Gordo Smasho about that And if we do it Memorial Weekend you will probably not want to camp there.
There are about a dozen trails right around Reno. We will be doing something different each day and depending on the number of people that show up we can have multiple trail rides to pick from according to difficulty or whatever you want to do.
We will come up with a trail ride schedule as the event nears but some of the options are:
Bud Canyon
Dolores
Twister
Billy Bobs
Steve's Loop
Bronco Canyon
Tonka
Hunter Lake
Moon Rocks
Prison Hill (Carson City)
Eldorado Canyon (Carson City?)
Camping isn't aweful but not ideal either. It's pretty windy until it gets late into the night. I was ok with it last year but my buddy that came with was not. There are no formal camp grounds. But I had a lot of fun last year
in the past circus circus has been as low as 35$ a night, so being cheap jeepers we have stayed there, plus supposedly it has "safer" parking for our rigs compared to other hotels.
But I've always been interested in other options .
