I lived in San Jose for 3 1/2 years, and we were renting a nice 2 bedroom duplex with a garage in the Cambrian Village area for $1450/ month. It just depends on what kind of commute you are looking at.

Everyone has helped me out alot! I will be in San Francisco starting June 25th.
I am really nervous about the relocation but it is gonna be a good move. Someone mentioned living in Hayward. I am gonna be looking for a place to live my first month out there. How is Hayward/Castro Valley? How is commuting across the San Mateo Bridge if anyone knows?

I know it is much improved since the bridge was widened several years ago. Hayward/Castro Valley is hit or miss as far as the neighborhoods go. I would suggest one of the newer sections of Castro Valley. What city are you working in? I live in Dublin now, which is about 10 mins east of Castro Valley. Might want to take a look around the Dublin/Pleasanton area too.

You're really going to have to decide where to live based on the cost of housing compared to the cost of commute. The bridges cost $4 and gasoline is $3.50+(?) a gallon. If you can find a decent place in San Bruno, Millbrae, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, or Redwood City it might save you a lot of time and money on your commute.

One thing I don't think was mentioned here... When figuring out where you'll live verses work don't forget to take BART into mind.

I'd kill to be able to effectively use mass transit to commute. If we end up moving up that way (a possibility) in the future I intend to choose my neighborhood based on BART.

^These are both good points. I didn't even consider this at all. I will be there for a month looking for a place to live so hopefully I can full take everything into consideration. You all have been tremendously helpfull in this stressful time for me!!! I guess I need to look at the transportation system a little more.

I re-located to the bay area about a year ago. I am a custom home builder so the penninsula was right up my alley. I am about 15 minutes south of Foster City and live in a really good neighborhood for less than 2000 a month for a house. The really tough thing was finding something dog friendly. Anyways, good luck and you'll be fine.

Since you are working in Foster city I would look in to renting in Redwood city, west side of El Camino Real, San Carlos, Belmont & San Mateo, redwood shores, nice area close to foster city, like 5 minutes. then you have your high dollar areas like woodside, Atherton, burlingame and Hillsborough. I grew up in these areas, I wish I could move back! I would stay away from the East bay, the commute in a royal pain in the @ss.
making 160k a year I would look at Redwood shores, San Carlos and Redwood city. The good thing about these areas is that utilities will be no big deal, Nice summer weather with cool evenings and MILD winters. I have Family in Redwood city they average about 60.00-70.00 for utilities in a 2 brm. apartment. check out http://www.redwoodcity.org this is pretty much what you find in the peninsula.
Give me a holler if you need more info :eeks1:
