Regearing Questions? READ THIS!

Hello Louisiana! 4.88s will be great with 35s. I run 4.56s and 35s and I dont like it, definetly underpowered. Its not awful, but if my axle would hold it I would have done 4.88s. I ran it with 4.56s and 33s for a long time too and it was perfect. RPM's will turn high but I've got the same mileage with 31s and 3.55s and 4.56s with 31s 33s and 35s.

ok in my 30/44 combo i'm going from 3.07 to 4.56 im gonna new a new carrier front and rear?

as this is a related thread to my question, i'd like to ask few things if it's ok.
let me first say hi, how are you...
i'm from indonesia where a lot of people and mechanics never think about regearing the final drive fo XJ while they swap they tires to bigger one.
XJ is not a popular compare to F Toyota Fj in indonesia, coz of it's heavy gas consumption.
i myself DD a '94 XJ with automatic tranny. riding on 31" Bridgestone Dueller AT with a sets of Sahara Wheels.
lot of people in this forum said 4.10 is good for DD on 31", what about 4.11? what's the difference?
another question is, where's the cheapest online to buy this 4.11 or 4.10 parts online? coz i'm in indonesia.
thanks a lots yo!!

The only difference is the teeth count, on the ring and pinion, to make up either 4.11 or 4.10. You can run a difference of 2% in axle gearing, and still be safe.

As above. You will end up with one in the front and the other ratio in the rear. Cant remember which way around it is any more but your diff design will not let you get the exact same ratio front and rear between these axles.

Okay guys, definitely a NOOB here, :gee: . I finally got my JEEP and I am going to lift it and put 32's on it. To keep everything within normal operating parameters (on a lifted, kicka$$ JEEP), it sounds like 4.56 (btw aw4, CHRY 8.25 rear, d30 front). Is this something that I can do, following instructions--if there are any (assume a vacuum of mechanical knowledge), or is this something that should only be tried if I want to keep the Jeep on blocks until it becomes a planter? I'm sinking a lot of money into the lift, sye/ cv ds, tires...preaching to the choir !!!1 . Thanks for your help.

The general consensus on your two questions is yes and no in that order. I've got 32's and I'm putting in my 4.56's next weekend. If you don't have knowledge of what your doing or won't have someone working with you that does, pay for it to be done. There are few who say that its a good learning experience, but it is a very precise set up. Stop and think about metal on metal turning at the speed that it does with the amount of torque being applied and you should gain some respect for the exact precision that goes into setting this up. Imagine measurements in the.001"

Those gears are pretty new, as they just became available within the last couple of months. So just a heads up you won't be getting a lot of responses yet.

seems like everyone is running 35 inchers? jeez, What about my dana 60 sitting in the garage with 7.17 gears and a detroit locker? I wanna throw it under my jeep (already has 38"s and stock axles and runs no prob.). Would my highway speeds suffer too much? I guess my question is, should i re-gear it to 5.38 first?

Well... it will be a HUGE difference from what you're used to!
Check out the RPM Calc on Randy's site: HERE

well, I will lose 1000 rpm at 60 mph if i change to 5.13s. I think I will do that, cause I really dont want to run 4000 RPM at 60 mph! sweet, thanks

O.K. I read all 13 pages. Good read.
I'm running 31's and after this set of tires will go to a 32 or a slightly smaller(than 32) metric equivalent. I have a '99 Sport AX15 D30 8.25 set up. I am concerned about hi way (65-75MPH) fuel economy as well as the *best* possible off and on road performance. From what I've gathered, it seems that 4.56's would be better than going with 4.10's. Is this correct?

its a tough call because for 31's, 4.10 is a good all around gearing for highway and offroad. for 33's, 4.56 is a good choice for the same.

i have 31's, 4.10, and 5sp on my 89 and think its perfect, a little on the low side, so i would have no problem going to 32's. although i would think 32's and 4.56 would be good also.

i think it comes down to whether you would be happy geared a little on the low side(32's and 4.56) or a little on the tall side(32's and 4.10). if you look at a gear calculator, 32's and 4.10 is what is recommended, but that doesnt account for a heavier tire, rolling resistance, and maybe heavier vehicle because of the possibility of heavy bumpers, tools...

if you do alot of highway driving, i would do 32's and 4.10 only if you know that you will never go bigger than 32's. when offroad, with 32's and 4.10, 4lo should be plenty deep enough.

Yes, that's correct. With the added mass of the 32's, the lower gears work better.

I ran 32's with 4.56 gears and an automatic for years. I would drive 75+ without a problem, and at 60 I could pull 22 mpg.

I run 33's and 4.56 on an ax-15...
I run out of tach room before I run out of power.
if you never plan to go bigger than 32's don't do the 4.56 IMHO On the 5sp you will run out of gears way to fast.
PM muddgygp
he currently has 4.56 and 32's and i think he will tell you don't do the 4.56 and 32's
IMHO

With an ax15, 4.56, and 32's, you should have

First gear:
1500 RPM : 8 mph
2500 RPM : 14 mph
3500 RPM : 19 mph

Second gear:
1500 RPM : 13 mph
2500 RPM : 22 mph
3500 RPM : 31 mph

Third gear:
1500 RPM : 22 mph
2500 RPM : 36 mph
3500 RPM : 51 mph

Fourth gear:
1500 RPM : 21 mph
2500 RPM : 52 mph
3500 RPM : 73 mph

Fifth gear:
1500 RPM : 40 mph
2500 RPM : 66 mph
3500 RPM : 93 mph

... how fast are you trying to go? The 4.0 wants to sit above 2500 on the highway, between 2500 and 3300.

What the 4.0 does NOT want, is to work harder. It would rather sit at 3300 RPM's for six hours than be bogged down trying to push big meats. Its an i6, not a v8.

Thanks guys! Please keep it coming!

I had 4.88's and 31's for a while. With that combo I drove to Rubicon (600miles? or 400? or something like that) wheeled there and drove back. It drove perfect. My top speed was about 68mph at 3000rpm. I got great good fuel economy (16~17mpg) too. I had 235's with 4.11's and that was also a match made in heaven. Btw, I used to daily drive that rig 120 miles a day.
