Regal Rush Jet Boat

Can you feel if it's cavetating? I've seen a few glass boats that didn't pick up water well and hated full throttle take offs. You had to come into the trottle easy to get them moving a little then hop on it.

Also before you do much pull the intake grate and inspect everything. If the grate is damaged or there is some crap causing a restriction the don't work very well.

I'm not very familiar with the small pumps but some have a cleanout for sand. The impeller should be easy to get to at least for a visual inspection.

Well FWIW lowrange, I'm very much into Jetskis/Waverunners and jetboats. We had a Baja Splash jet boat a while back that had a Merc 90hp in it (just a li'l guy) and towards the end of it's useful life we started having the same problem. We leaned towards something to do with the impeller/driveline going out but never figured it out exactly. One of my brothers was driving it under influence one night, left the drain plugs loose in the hull, and it ended up grenading the motor so needless to say, the impeller problems became the least of our worries. Anyway, I hope you have good luck finding that ring for cheaper than what you have so far.

Exactly! It hates full throttle take offs. It'll just sit there pushing water along... The only way i get it on the water is stay on half throttle for about 3-4 minutes... then she'll slowly plane off. Urg!

Unfortunately, no. This style wear ring is a Merc only part and they are quite proud of it. I found the part at a couple other places for around 260 but by the time I added shipping it was right at 300 so I bought it from the local marina.

311.02 for the ring and 256.54 for the impeller. I've never had to spend another dime on this boat in 3 years so I can't complain too much. :)

I just hope that fixes my problem!

Well, I got the wear ring and impellar installed today!

So before I take it to the water I wanted to start it before I got there.

I stuck a battery in it and tried to start it. No good. The starter tried to engage but seems to not have enough juice to turn the motor... so I put some cables on it from my truck. Still nothing. The starter would engage and grunt. After trying for no more than 5 minutes the starter was extremely hot and the oil was trying to bubble out of the top so I quit. I pulled the starter to bench test it and it spun pretty good. Seems like nothing would be wrong with it. I took all the connections loose between the battery and starter, cleaned them really well and put it all back together - same thing.

I'm leaning towards a new starter. Another 120 bucks.

So, several years later I still haven't fixed this problem and it's time to give it another try. It's been sittin in the barn since then.

Any new ideas.

My last update didn't solve the problem. If anything it's worse now.

Random idea but perhaps the new impeller and wear ring are too tight a fit and the starter can't turn it. Perhaps removing the pump and turning over the motor to see if it starts up then you can pinpoint it to possibly being the parts u replaced.
Just a thought

No, but I posted in it.

That's when I realized how active NAXJA was.

It's amazing. I posted a boat quesition on a Jeep forum and got 29 responses.

I posted a boat question on a boat forum and got hardly no responses. lol

Oh well. I think I'm just going to bit the bullet and tear the drive apart. It has to be something obvious.

I'm going to go check the clearance between the impeller and the wear ring shortly. I'll report my findings.

So, I pulled the whole nozzle off. Removed the wear ring and impeller and measured the clearance between the two.

When I replaced the wear ring I didn't actually replace the impeller. So the impeller that's on it now is the original one. I didn't replace it at the time because it doesn't LOOK worn. It looks like it was made that way.

The clearance between the outermost edge of the impeller and the ID of the wear ring was .043". Which is about .040" more than most people say it's supposed to be.

With it not looking worn I guess I'm just going to have to order an impeller and see what that does.

On a different subject, the last time I took it out the motor was making some noise that didn't sound healthy. I guess that'll be something I figure out on my own since there isn't actually a plethora of information on this thing on the internet.

BTW, the pump that I'm working on is a SportJet 120XR. It is a Mercruiser 120hp power head.

Pull the impeller off and there are shims behind it on the shaft to adjust the clearance. You only need to replace the wear ring or impeller if they are damaged or the wear ring is grooved bad.

My guess is the impeller is fine and more than likely so is the wear ring. Any merc dealer should be able to get the parts and you should be able to get the shims at an industrial supply place. I'm pretty sure they are stainless.

There's weren't any shims. The impeller is off and sitting in the floor in front of me. The wear ring looks good other than some scratches here and there. but still looks brand new. It should. It's only got about 20 minutes of run time on it.

How would shims behind the impeller adjust clearance? The wear ring is not tapered at all... I can put the impeller straight thru the wear ring with no problem...

I still don't know much about this.

I found an impeller on the net. Finally. $249.50

I just don't want to buy it before I measure it. It still looks new! ugh.

Hell I just assumed they were like the others where there is a slight taper to the wear ring and the shims adjust the clearance.

I would call Riddle Marine and talk to Phil or Doug. Doug knows a lot about the sport jets and probably remembers how you adjust them. He probably knows someone that can build up your current impeller if needed and save you some $$. It's done a lot with the bigger pumps.

Either way should be able to get the parts as well.

Btw, Lincoln. Thanks for the advice. 3 years later and you're still trying to help me figure this out. lol

I've been trying to buy a new one for about a year now. :laugh2:

I've been kind of thinking of buying an unfinished boat. It was being built for a motor just like yours. If I get by there I'll take a look at it and see if I get any ideas.

Thanks, I just sent them a fairly long email. Maybe they'll get back to me in the morning. If not I'll give them a call.

They have some really nice looking boats on their site!

Sounds good. Let me know what comes of it.
