Now, the best way I can measure the clearance between the two right now is to slide the impeller all the way against one side of the wear ring, measure the gap and devide by 2. lol

Either way, it seems to be way too much.

You will need to call one of those guys to find out the proper way to check the clearance. I've always checked my outboard with the impeller on the shaft. Basically have to reach in with a feeler gauge. The impeller looks good.

Here is what the newer (and larger) sport jet wear ring looks like. Pretty similar to yours but you said it didn't have the taper. This is a stainless wear ring from http://exwelding.ca/ . Someone else to call. He knows sport jets really well too.

Thats what I don't understand. why doesn't mine taper. I guess I need to know the factory clearance. I did check the clearance with the impellar on the shaft. The feeler gage I had only went to..05. It was more than .05"... ugh. Maybe ill get some info tomorrow from these guys. Thanks for the links.
 
It's probably just that way. A 120 isn't much of a motor.

Make sure you know the RPM's when you call. At WOT I think you should be around 5000. If it jumps to 5000 really quick and doesn't pickup speed there is something going on with the pump. If it slowly gains RPM's then it's the motor.

Other things I thought of. Any obstruction in the intake will cause problems. Even a bent fin can cause it to cavitate and lose thrust. Pumps don't like air.

Make sure the reverse bucket clears completely when up. It needs to be completely out of the jet stream.
 
It revs about the same as it did the day I got it. I'll give it 25% throttle and barely get going. At 100% throttle the RPMs are between 4500 and 5000 but i'm still going 5mph with the front way up in the air. Mid Plane... It acts like I've got a pallet of bricks in the engine bay.
 
You peaked my interest so I went searching. Seems the impeller and wear ring are non adjustable and once they wear a replacement is in order.

Also it seems the ride plate is another point of problems. The gasket goes bad or the bolts loosen up so it leaks. That would basically cause it to suck in air.

If you end up wanting to mess with the impeller there is a guy here that will build up the impellers with welding and then regrind them.

I had forgotten about the UMHW wear rings but they are a pretty neat idea. You can run a tighter clearance with them without worrying about damage. I don't know who is making them now though. Doug Riddle (link above) probably would though. It would probably be about the same amount of money with a little performance gain.
 
Seems like im just going to have to pull the pump and inspect everything... I really don't want to do that. It really sucks that no one around here works on these boats.
 
I have, it looks good to me. I don't see any obvious places where it would suck air. Is there a possibility that its sucking air thru the hole the impeller shaft goes thru?

You'll have to excuse my grammar. Im on my phone. Lol
 
As an ex Yamaha and Kawasaki Factory Certified Ski tech, your stuff is WAY past worn out. You should be measuring that clearance with feeler gauges... That is 100% your problem. Seen it many times with waverunners, especially down at the beach where I used to work. Guys would run them in the ocean break areas, and suck up tons of sand particles while riding them. The wear rings, and impellers would only last a few months because of the honing action all the particles cause. In normal freshwater running, it should last years. cant help ya on where to fin replacements, but im sure they are out there.

I didnt read all the pages, so I hope none of this info is annoyingly redundant...lol. However, even when the impellers are shot, they look new. It doesnt take much to make them start slipping.

See this is what I've heard elsewhere also. But in the link that Lincoln recently posted it says this:

Straight from the M2 service manual:

1. Place impeller in wear ring bore and push to one side.
2. Measure clearance between impeller blades and wear ring with a feeler gauge. If clearance is over 0.100 in. (2.54 mm), replace impeller and wear ring.

NOTE: Impeller wear usually accounts for 75% of the wear. Reducing the clearance can improve both top speed and acceleration performance.

I feel like that could be the problem. It's certainly worth a try but since I'm a broke individual a $250 impeller is an aweful expensive attempt.

I spent most of today calling shops around here to see if they could possibly order in a new impeller and let me come check the clearance with my wear ring before I make the purchase but no one can do that.

I guess I'm just going to have to break down and make the purchase but before I do that I want to make absolutely sure that it's not sucking air from anywhere.
 
In one of the links I posted guys have been building the wear ring up with JB weld and having good results. It takes some time and probably isn't as good as a new one but it's cheap.

I really do think you should call Riddle or ExWelding. Both should be able to give you a bunch of ideas. The impellers can be built up back to factory specs and there are a bunch of options for wear rings. Those two should know of everything available and who can do it.

I would pull the ride plate and inspect the seal. Several of the posts I read were people having problems with it on the 120. Basically slipped out of position. Air sucking in and causing it to cavitate will cause the same drastic wear that sand does.
 
So, I don't see any way it could be sucking air around the ride plate. I figured it couldn't hurt to replace the impeller so I used up all of my life savings and bought one. It's on the way from Florida so it should be here fairly quick. I called Doug Riddle and didn't get an answer but he has responded to my email several times.

I'll get the impeller in, engine tuned up and in the water to try out next week if all goes well and the weather hold up. Now the only thing on my mind is that funny noise the engine made last time I had it out... maybe it's gone away... I hope.

Now, how do you go about running this engine on the trailer? Is there a way? I've been told there isn't but I sure don't want to go all the way to the lake just to start the engine.
 
I don't know for sure on that pump but most pumps have a packed seal around the shaft. If you run them out of water that seal heats up and ruins within a minute or so.

I wouldn't do it just on the chance.

You could dig a pit in your yard. :D
 
There you go. Be careful with the mud though.

I would keep the old impeller. I don't know why it couldn't be built up. Usually they just TIG some material on them and then grind them back in shape.

I seriously would have tried the JB weld idea before buying the new impeller. Hell you aren't out anything. :D
 
Got the impeller in today. I thought my old impeller didn't look worn...

Man what a difference! When I put the new one next to the old one it looks like it's been to hell and back! I didn't check the clearance but I'd say it's about .010" clearance now.

I got it bolted up, gear oil in the tail housing, drained the old gas and refilled with fresh premium gas and injector cleaner, and replaced all 4 spark plugs.

Now, I have 2 other things to address.

1. As soon as I turn the key on I hear the high pitched *BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP*. I've only ever heard that noise when it was low on oil. The oil res is full. Still here the BEEEEEEEEEEEP. Gotta figure that out...

2. When I initially tried to start it she fired up immediately and sounded like it ran smooth for about 5 seconds. Then I killed it. I tried to start it back up about 30 minutes later and it won't hit a lick. Now, that's when I decided the gas was 2 years old and probably needed to be replaced... After trying to start it for another 15 minutes or so the starter decided to quit working. (It's already been rebuilt 3 times - It's time for a new one)

Now, as soon as the new starter gets here I'll try again with fresh fuel and see what happens.

I hope it's just a fuel problem and not an ignition problem. Those ignition parts look expensive.
