Redbird SRA Trail clean up and maintance Nov 15th

I'm out... have to work today to try and meet schedule. Yet another Anheuser Busch project... they are looking to spend spend spend before the InBev buyout. Be safe!

get some pics if you can guys. It hasn't stopped raining in columbus! Looks like i would have been stuck a few times already!

It was a "little" sloppy......but not to bad.

I am home, safe and sound.

We got a bunch done today....trees were felled....trail was widend...mud pit was sort of bypassed.

Thanks to all those that showed up....a finger to all those that I thought would be camping with me last night....in the closed campground.

Thanks to those that put my top and doors on for me.

Thanks to Les...for being Les.

Rev

Good day overall, did some good work to the trail and survived the crappy conditions. I don't think I ever want to wheel Redbird after a week of solid rain again though.

I'll let Hale chime in with his experience on the way home. Let's just say it ended with a trailer ride ;)

I's consider it a success. Pretty good turn out considering the weather. Next Redbird trip will have orders to check the boards before you leave. If it's pretty soggy, we'll hold off. 21 is not meant to be ran wet and soggy. Way to many close calls with major trail carnage namely, steep downhill descents with trees at the bottom. I'll be honest, I was not looking forward to this trip with the weather being so wet for the past 2 weeks......but all turned out good. Thanks to all that showed up and participated. The most important thing: we did get MWC decals on the Adopt a trail sign. I'm sure someone has pics. I ended up forgetting my camera at home.

The trip home:
Roughly 5-6 miles south of Dugger; My cruise is set on 60mph. It starts letting up and then accelerates and does this a couple of times. I say, "Something's not right guys." About that time, a loud and rapid thump, thump, thump starts. I immediately think "centering ball" with all of Jims issues. I got the Jeep off the side of the road no more than 100ft. after the noise started. Grabbed the drive-shaft and gave it a good shaking. Centering ball looks great. However, the pinion has around 3/8" play left, right, up and down. Moves in and out just a smidge too. After several phone calls to various individuals I lined up a trailer to borrow. Dad came to the rescue and is now a member of the Elite MWC Road Recovery Team. This Elite group includes members such as Lawn'Cher and What Rd. The cheby towed it like a dream. It will move under it's own power and I drove it on/off the trailer in 4wd.

Big big kudos to Byron (IllianaXJ). He caught up with us, took us to get eats and, helped us kill some time until Dad could get to us. It would have been a looong wait along side the road. Not as long as others have waited along side the road(think Kansas), but it would have sucked none-the-less.

I'll get it apart the first of next week and see what's up. Already thinking of upgrades if possible. I think it may just be the pinion bearing but who knows.......:dunno: I've already contacted the guy that installed the gears and chewed his ass throughly.:sad1:

I did get inside the house. She did not change the locks. Looks like it'll be the couch tonight, but at least I'm in the house.:D

Find me the snatch block thread Mac.

BTW, if anyone is interested in holding a chainsaw how-to clinic at Winterfest please, post up!

It was nice to meet all of you today, I wish I could have stayed longer. I hope next time will be better weather. Hope everything turns out well for you Hale. BTW, Rev, you should make up a set of the harness brackets for your seats an put a patent on it $$$$$$$ I want half.

Well ... I posted up that I was not going to wheel ... suspecting a "Cliffs" moment ... and I should have paid attention to my earlier good sense. Damage included a busted passenger side glass and "damaged" front bumper. Damage not exclusive to the Jeep is to my confidence and/or evaluation of the work I've done to my piece of junk. Not sure if the problems I had were due to poor tires, poor weight distribution after the chop, or just plain stupid driving. I do know that the front bumper I built did it's intended job, because as hard as we hit those tree's, the damage to the front end would have been critical. Sorry about expressing my disappointment/frustration publicly guys.

Thanks everyone for an otherwise great time. I unloaded two full trash bags, and I think we made some good improvements to the trail to help eliminate potential erosion as well as damage to peoples equipment. However, I will not forget two Sycamore trees that will see my chainsaw in the future! ;)

Needless to say, when I got home, the first thing on my agenda was something warm to eat and some hot coffee as well as get a fire going in the furnace. An hour later, with the help of a couple of Motrin, I was warm and feeling a bit better.

Les

PS: Thanks Rev for your tolerance, and Jim for being such a brave soul!

. Sorry about expressing my disappointment/frustration publicly guys.

That's just part of it Wildman....no worries here. I think we've all been in your shoes at one point in time.

Next time, start a new cigertte.

Good to see you again, looking forward to Winterfest.

well as I expected, I am glad i didn't bring the little feller out there. I think the combination of my handicapped ass and my small jeep would not have done good in the slop. I am more confident in the Jeeps ability in the mud than mine though!

It sounds like there was some carnage and I'm glad everyone made it home OK!

Les all the work you've done to your jeep made it survive that litlle hiccup you had saturday and what happened in august. Sounds like a little bad luck streak. What did i miss?

Hoping to See/meet everyone at WinterFest!

Outer Pinion bearing was toast. I took it all apart, and ran roughly 1 gallons of brake cleaner through it. Lots of little shavings and pieces of junk bearing in there. I replaced both inner and outter and am back on the road. I've got crappy phone pics, I'll post them if I get time.

Good to hear. Aren't you glad you didn't drive it home :D
Fo Sho.

I think it's my fault too. I don't think I got enough gear oil in it when I changed it after the install. That bearing looks like it was starving for some lube.:dunce:

Live and learn I suppose......

I had the opposite problem - overfilled it and caused the pinion seal to leak and fling gear oil all over the gas tank.
