Rear XJ bumper with tire carrier for cheap

I was going to get this bumper from Daryl at the link below, but I figure I rather put that $$$ towards some sort of lockers. He does have a good price on this combo though. I was going to have him (Daryl) lower the tire carrier 4" to be able to get better visability out of my rear window with a 35" spare tire. I thought I'd throw this on a thread to inform my xj brothers. He was going to charge me $300 plus $40 for shipping total for the combo.

I'll reply to my own post :compwork: I did order the bumper/tire carrier and hopefully should have it installed for the Hollister trip on the 28th. Hopefully it's as good as it looks on ebay. I'll keep you guys posted.

I just put one of the extremebumpers on a friends post '97 XJ

It fit great till we tryed to close the door! The post for the tire swing was about 1" in too close. {I guess that is why it is for the 1984 to 1996 :idea:}

Any way I cut the post off put a new hole into the bumper welded a new post and bolt on to it, then on the other side extended the atachment part about 1" and cut off 1/2" of the tab, then it fit like a glove! :looney:

but it is a nice looking bumper

the mounting system for that bumper is the stock mounting bolts..... not too happy with that. . . (he took the stock mounting brackets and welded them to the new bumper he fabbed up) but ya im the friend whose post 97 xj Letterman put the bumper on......... (ive got a 98)

ill get pictures of it this weekend when i go wheeling. . . but ya the bumper looks nice... holds up a 31" tire nicely... i contacted the guy earlier and he said that the tire carrier will hold a 37" tire without difficulty

ooh ya.. he used to have them for $250 (buy it now) he raised the price a bit. . .

His auction started at $275 & had a buy it now of $325. I got it for $275 because nobody else bid, but then I had him lower the tire carrier 4" so I will be able to see out of the back a little better. So we settled on $300 & $40 for shipping.

Jeeps are built not bought, you should have spent the money on a welder or chop saw. Oh ya, a bolt on bottle opener!!! :cheers:

If I would have meet you sooner, I would have had you build me 1 if you wanted to. You did a good job on your bumpers. I've never welded before so I have to buy stuff for now, I really don't have the space to do it. I do need some rock sliders in the near future. Have you fabed any up? I really like the Rocky Road ones because the only 2 xj in professional rockcrawling use/used them & they have a 100% guarantee not to break/bend. I bought mine pretty built and now am filing in a few blanks (lockers, rock sliders, lower control arm skid, underbody skids).

I will start building rock sliders this week if I have time to pick up my friends M tech bender in S.J.. Rocky Roads products are very good quality. The square tubing is hitch stock, heavy and strong. What would be so cool is to incorperate sliders with frame stiffeners connected to the trans plate and tied into an internal roll cage. As for rear bumpers I really think they must connect to the tow hitch bolt plate or it will not last with the weight of a spare, hi lift etc. I'll send you picks of my first attempt at sliders when they are done. At this point i'll build what ever you want for the exsperience, you pay for materials.

Sounds good Eric. I really want some sliders, but hate to pay the $250 plus tax and shipping to get them. I got the rear bumper & tire carrier I ordered & it looks real good. I haven't installed it yet so hopefully it all works. The guy welded the bumper to stock bumper braces so I just need to bolt these in. It came with 2 large d hooks, but I have a hitch so I didn't get on on the bumper. We'll see how it holds up to my spare 35" tire. You can really get a lot of business because there are lots of guys out there that need some bumpers and rock sliders, roll bars etc. How much do you think it would cost to build sliders up like the rocky road ones? Is that material harder to get/more expensive?
